Prevent my brother from using my power off button...

Okay, my brother thinks it is funny to turn off my computer while I'm using it by sneaking under my desk and hitting the shut off button on the front of the computer, otherwise known as the button to turn on the computer as well. I hate seeing all my games exit, pages be deleted and school work be erased. My mother knows but he does it anyway. Is there anything I can do in the settings to prevent this? I know it is bad to turn it off while all the pages are open and have everything quit at once, I go into the start menu and shut it off from there when I turn off the computer. Help on this? Thanks!

you could disconnect the button or put a second toggle switch in it so that the toggle needs to be on for the button to work

In Power Options there is a setting to change what happens when you press the power button. Set it to "do nothing".

yea but it sounds like its physically powering off instead of going though the shutdown
he needs to either goto into the bios and change the power off to SOFT Off or disconnect the switch

No he simply just hits the turn off button on the computer, it comes that way, it's the on/off button. It's just a bad feature to have it instantly shut down within a snap of a finger.

it would need to be a REALLY old computer for that to be the default
you need enter the bios setup and see if there is a option for power button behavior else you may need todo a bit of modding
would probably just be easier to keep your little brother out

The software trick newtekie1 said should work but it will still go off if held for 5 seconds. Only way to stop the five second option is to unplug but, then, good luck turning it on/off. Maybe you should be looking at buying a new case that has a locked door shielding the power button.

I think the op is most likely sub 15 years of age ... so none of the suggestions here are good I think you need to talk to your mom and explain to her that if she doesn't intervene then they sooner or latter the computer is going to be "broken"

Around... Haha. I am very smart with tech and stuff, I mean there's gotta be something in the settings to configure the shut off button's features. Thanks guys

I concur with newtekie1, set the On button to do nothing when pressed. This will only affect the behavior under Windows, you'll be able to turn the computer on normally. That might fail, though, since there's the hard shutdown that FordGT mentioned. That is controlled by the power supply and can't be circumvented and it's not too hard to figure out.

Alternatively:
1. buy: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B008Z1PLVE/?tag=tec06d-20
2. disconnect power and reset switches
3. ???
4. PROFIT(?)
Got one on my HTPC. :toast:

I like to swing my legs back and forth under the desk..
so if any small children were sneaking around under the desk they would end up with a size 11 to the nose.. (some may call this a kick to the face.. but accidents do happen)
also just change the settings.. but i didnt think they just turned off any more since xp.
a bit like how pressing alt f4 twice wont turn off your pc any more.

I have an idea. Unplug the power button and use something conductive to jump the pins when you need to boot. I know my board has a power button inside the case too, but not all are like that. This also could be a great opportunity as a brother to kick his ass and get away with it. If your mom gets pissed off, tell her that it wouldn't have happened if she did something about it in the first place and didn't leave you to take matters into your own hands. Tell her you wrote a multi-page essay and lost it because your brother was trying to piss you off. Then tell her that it succeeded and he had what was coming to him. :)

Edit: I'm a terrible role model. I like my idea (the second one, that is), but you might not want to actually do it unless you know exactly what the consequences will be.

windows 8.1

easy. tell it to do nothing.

and then hit him with something. he sounds like a little turd.

Well, since we're adding screenshots, here is one of the same setting in Windows 7.

At my gaming cafe we use hard locks to circumvent it. I cant possibly think of another way.

It's a pity the OP can't do a quick ghetto mod to electrify the power button. It would be brotherly justice to give the little twerp a mild shock the next time he tried to pull that stunt! ;)

If you hold the power button, the system will force shut off even if you set it in Windows to "Do nothing".
