Problem with SAPPHIRE HD 7970 GHz Edition 3GB GDDR5 VAPOR-X

Hi,

I have a problem with my Sapphire 7970(GHz Edition 3GB GDDR5 VAPOR-X) - when I turn on the PC the fans start at full speed, no video output and LED D4000 on the back of the card is lit.

The GPU is second hand, but the person who sold me claims that the card is OK.

Anyway, I find out a several issues:
- the heat sink of the GPU is damaged - one part of the surface of the cooler that should contact the CPU is not flat. It seems that this was deformed somehow.
- some of the thermal pads for the RAM/VRM are missing
- 2 of the screw that fix the cooler to the card are damaged - when i try to tight them i notice that the thread is worn

My question is what is the meaning of D4000, because i can fix all problems, but i don't want to spent my time if for example D4000 states that the card is completely damaged.

Judging by the rest of the damage you describe I wouldn't be trying to fix it I would be returning it to whoever you got it from.

Then you are stuck with a very damaged card that IMO not worth salvaging.

How did you pay for it? If PayPal or credit card you can file a claim to get your money bk, dishonest seller as it wouldn't be in that condition without their knowing

For now the returning of the card is not an option - i cannot contact the seller.

Sorry, my previous card was a 7970 Dual-X OC but I am looking at it now and I can't see any LED's on mine so don't even have something to go on. You will just have to flex your "Google Fu" and see if you can come up with anything. The card as you describe is very badly damaged so even if you could get something from that LED code chances of fixing it are still pretty slim with the rest of the problems with it you would just fix one thing and another would probably come up.

According to this the red LED was lit due to the fan failure.

Yeah completely different board layout than I have. So if it is in fact a fan error you now have ANOTHER problem to deal with...This is genuinely a losing battle you are trying to fight here. The fact that screws are stripped and the "contact patch" for the GPU cooler appears to damaged, the cooler is going to be a problem regardless if now the fans don't work either. You have been sold a total write off of a card....
