Hello, I need some help determining what happened to my Athlon XP 2400.
I have access to a computer parts recycling center and I bought an ASUS A7N8X motherboard that looks brand new, even has the matching box, but nothing else.

I also purchased an athlon xp 2400 for 10 bucks to go with it.
I dont know for sure if it was good before hand, as you never know with a recycling center, although the motherboard is most likely ok because it is nice and shiny with no heat marks.

This motherboard has the nforce 2 ultra400 chipset that takes ddr400/333/266.
I hooked it up in a box with 1 gig of my Patriot ddr400 and my ati x850xt to try just to turn it on.

The motherboard site said to use at least a 230 watt power supply so I used a 250.

I hooked it all up, and flipped the switch, and the board powered up, but did not post.
I noticed a slight burning smell so I turned it off and took it apart and saw that the CPU was burned up on the bottom. The burn is a small bump that is brown.

What would cause this to happen?
Could the processor been bad beforehand then burned up when I tried to test it?
Did I burn the processor by not having a big enough power supply?

Any help is appreciated, as I mainly specialise in Intel stuff, so I know little about AMD world.

Not enough power wld make it less likely to melt the cpu lol. Did you properly fit the heat sink onto the CPU with thermal paste etc.??? Are any of the pins on the bottom of the CPU bent?

Yes, I put the heatsink on correctly and I used Arctic Ceramique thermal paste.
Later today we will try another cpu
