Having a problem with my optical drive, it seems to sometimes work at full speed and installs games very quick and burns very quick, then I will try installing another game or opening a magazine disk and it will churn for ages eventually installing the game after an hour or opening the magazine disk after say 4mins!!!! Its very annoying and I have no clue as to why its happening:mad:

When its running at full speed its sweet and exactly gives the performance I thought it would when i bought it, but all of these slow downs can last for ages and it really is driving me mad, any help on this would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Sounds like it's just dirty/shitting out on you. Can't imagine there being a software cause for this.
Tried reading the disks with another drive/machine?

I have this with my crysis disc. Only way to get it to read it in a reasonable time, is to insert the disc, then when I hear it churn about, I eject the disc, then close the tray (so disc is still in tray) and its fine. Something to do with firmware incompats iirc.

Ok...so should I look at finding a firmware update for the drive, any sites which are good for this at all, thanks.

does the drive have lightscribe? if so... the models with LS tend to wear out alot faster for some reason even if you dont use that feature. i have gone through 8 LS drives in the past year and all i do is copy dvd's.

Thanks for your help people. I flashed the firmware and it was still no good. Stumbled across this - http://winhlp.com/node/10 and it worked a treat. Installs are all super quick and it is reading all my disks really fast, hope this helps someone who may have had serious issues with their dvd drive :)
