Hey guys! Just wanted to post this here. I'm a PC enthusiast, overclocker, temp. freak and I got myself a hackable PS3 slim some time ago (arrrrrrrrr mateys!).

I may make some of you console lovers angry now... But in light of recent events (possibility to OC) and wanting to overclock my PS further, I slightly "frankensteined" it.
I regularly clean it and it was repasted not too long ago(MX-6).
I have the fan profile set to min. 35% and max. temp to 65°C.
I'm also using Evilnat's OC CFW (600 core, 750 mem)

In some more demanding games (GTA IV, NFS Carbon, GTA V, TLOU, GT6 etc.) the fan would still ramp up to about 42-43% to hold the 65°C treshold.
Sooooo... I did this:

(yes, that's also a laptop cooling pad)
The fan is connected to an outside 12V1A power adapter so other than cutting through the top mask, nothing has been done to the PS.

XMB before:
  • 60°C CPU
  • 62°C RSX
XMB after:
  • 50°C CPU
  • 52°C RSX
I have also tested GTA IV. Before the mod, the fan would go up to 41-42% to hold the 65°C treshold and now:

While keeping the fan still at 35%, the max. temp on the RSX is now 6°C lower.

Comparing apples-to-apples and setting the fan speed manually to 40% the difference is even bigger:

In conclusion, by adding a secondary fan to the PS3 spinning at around 1000 RPM (you can barely hear it), I have achieved a lowering of temperatures by more than 10°C, both on CPU and RSX.

I think that's a great improvement, it will improve the longevity of it and I think the PS just looks really cool like this!

I am aware of the fact that the intended airflow might be disturbed now and some components might get hotter, but air is still being pulled inside from the sides and goes out through the PSU on the back, the PS seems a lot cooler in general to the touch. The hottest components are the CPU, RSX and PSU so I think everything should be fine. Will report on it if it dies :D

Sorry if this hurts your eyes and for the long post. Here's a potato.

Yeah mate. Clearly hasnt worked. Youre still bluescreening.

nice stuff, but if i had one, and time and money (we never do, dont we),
i would have a "chiller" (as in mini AC), dropping cold air over the intakes.

but since its getting barely below 7C outside in the winter, and usually 30-40C in the summer,
short of the space with the washing machine rooms have AC, so room temps arent getting high enough that it impacts
anything getting warm (tv/pc/ups)

I hope this is not a troll  PS3s are notorious for dying (YLOD) but they kinda fixed this with the slim version. The point of this post is that the fan doesn't spin up so much. When you go over 35%, it gets loud as f*ck. So with lowering the temperature we're able to keep these 15+ year consoles running, that was the point

i actually had one of the first, preordered and all.
it had a broken controller, so i never had it going loud, but of course died within a year.
2 weeks replaced with updated unit, having endured fan noise ever since (until i sold it for DIY gaming lappy).

did work for sony (military channel) for almost 10y as well, so...

A Slim died on you like that?

yeah, and of course they neve said if it was the fan or the controller not ramping up with temps.
but was ok, as i got it back right away and they provided free shipping both ways,
with retunr being 2 day shipping.

That's weird. Mostly the biggest issues were with the 1st edition fat PS3, which was backwards-compatible and had the 90nm GPU. I have a 2nd gen Slim and there are basically no issues with these systems. Well, all good if you got your replacement :)

I have that exact same laptop cooling pad, lol.

It's funny how much the world has become the same because of the sheer manufacturing power of China.

Believe it or not, I have 3 of these. They cost less than 20$(17€) here and they're really good. I have one for my PS3, one for my Lenovo Gaming laptop and I bought one for my girlfriend too. Temperature difference on PS3 is negligible, but in both laptops I get around 10 degrees less

What's the plugin you're using to get the fps statistics? Do you know if it works on Rebug 4.84? Since there's no newer CFW with DEX functionality I can't upgrade my CECHA01 past this without losing debug kernel support

What do you mean? Evilnat made a 4.89, 4.90 and 4.91 is currently in the making, all versions, CEX, PEX and DEX

Edit: to answer your question, it's called VSHFpsCounter, it's included in all of Evilnat's releases, you need to activate it throud WebMan mod, should be L3 + R3

Edit2: Today we've achieved stability on 750 core/800 memory(stock speeds are 500/650)

Interesting, it's been a while and at least until 4.88 there weren't DEX FWs available. I'll have to look at Evilnat's progress sometime. Shame Rebug disbanded. It had always been my CFW of choice. I tell you a 1st gen full BC PS3 unleashed is quite the machine.

I used to have one before this slim. Only had it for about a month, then it YLODd on me. So if you're going to install Evilnat's CFW please, for your own sake, DO NOT use the OC CFW, trust me, I know :D

I have it on my PC but it just doesn't feel the same as playing on OG hardware with the Sixaxis DS3 controller :)

Oh no, overclocking + 90 nm chips that are already running toasty is a bad idea. Mine's one of the lucky few CECHA01's that lived to tell the tale and didn't malfunction to this day, I'll definitely keep it that way. Not sure if migrating from Rebug to Evilnat even matters at this point, but might when I get bored.

Must admit it sees a lot less use now that I got a Mac mini to pull Retroarch duty, though.
