Unfortunately, reports that Sony had started to use a 65nm version of the Cell processor in its 40GB PlayStation 3 consoles have turned out to be false, with a Sony spokesperson saying that the new version of the PS3 continues to use 90nm chips. However, it's not all bad news because the new 40GB PS3 has been updated so that it uses less power - the original model would use 180W to 200W, compared to the updated model which uses just 120W to 140W. Sony has said it is still planning to release a 65nm version of the Cell, but for the time being it looks like gamers will have to stick with 90nm PS3s.

no doubt the removal of the ps2 components has led to the raised energy efficiency of the console but it will be interested to see the energy consumption once they are using the 65nm chips, maybe they can get it below 100w use.

I'm impressed by how little energy the PS3 uses, esepecially with a power hungry PPC in it, and a G70. Good work sony! (Not often I get to say that).

Agreed V-zero. I just wish it wasnt so blamin hot. That thing puts out some serious heat. I need to rig mine up with a phase change unit <rofl>

SWEET overclocked ps3 FTW

i would like to see the oc ability of the cell cpu.

Considering Sony has abandoned manufacturing them and is seemingly unlikely to adapt them to anything other than the ps3 makes me think these Cell cpu's are not all they are touted to be.

Toshiba wants to use them in their future qosmio laptops...

That series of laptops is also a POS. They just want to break it more.
(installed XP SP2 int. corp. and none of the devices would work with the original drivers or new ones, used their retarded recovery cd and it decides to function - wtf - battery also crapped out, as did the HDD)

I believe IBM is planning to use them in some supercomputers, so they can't be that bad.

The Cell is a number cruncher. Great for scientific apps. like F@H and to be categorised somewhere between GPU and CPU but nothing to play games on.

I don't know if you've ever tried surfing the web on the PS3, but the Cell can't handle Youtube for shiite. Liek 10 Frames per second. Why would I want to buy a laptop with that damn thing in there?

it youtubes just fine, i dont know what you talking about. How can the cell not play youtube, but and fold like a mofo? Also the laptop has both an intel core2duo and a cell, when it needs to do massive number crunching, it dynamically sends processes to the cell.

That has to do with software, not the cpu.

When it come to power usage i really do not care it the performance i want:rockout:
