I recently had a strange issue with my PC while gaming the other night. While in middle of Starfield I heard this explosion along with seeing just a bright white flash come from bottom of mobo in case, above my PSU. My pc instantly shutdown and began to reboot but I was able to hit the shutoff switch before it fired back up. It was midnight here so I had to dig out my phone and immediately turned on my light (maybe 5 seconds tops) and opened my case up. I saw nothing on bottom left of mobo near reset buttons, CMOS, etc... and put my nose right above the PSU which faces fan up in case. I smelled nothing like burned electrical components that I was expecting. Since it was so late I just went to bed to deal with it the next day. While having dinner the next day I bring up the issue with my PC (got to lay groundwork with wife on possibly getting replacement parts, LOL) and that it literally exploded. At that time my daughter chimes in with "is that what that noise was, I could hear it thru my headphones in my room gaming", to my relief as that helps me even more with my NEED for parts.

Long story short, I took a look in my PSU and can see what looks to me like a blown capacitor and just wanted to get others feedback on this. I can't take it apart as I literally bought it 6 weeks ago so I presume I will be doing a warranty replacement. The power supply is: Corsair RM1000x and I have attached the best pic I could get with my phone. This one was to be the replacement for my old HX850 that died on me recently after nearly a decade of use, RIP. I thought I would have been OK with the new Corsair even though it wasn't an HX variant. I never buy parts from Bestbuy but I was too impatient to do without gaming, I knew better! My initial plan was to get an HX1000i so looks like I will just have to bite the bullet and have gaming withdrawals for the next several days.

I would also like to add that I was able to boot up my PC last night but only got into windows for maybe a minute before I shut it down as I was too scared to even run anything.

Looks like a transformer, you can see the coils in it.

RMA it for sure. And nothing wrong with buying at BestBuy besides the price.

Looks like a transformer winding short. Likely the step-down transformer to convert 120V to 12V, and the other secondary rails.

Ah, thanks for such quick feedback!! As for Bestbuy comment, I should say our store doesn't carry alot of the more highend products (only 4 PSU's here locally in store) so I meant it more in that I should have just ordered the one i wanted at the time rather than settle. Definitely nothing wrong with their products at all. Matter of fact already ordered my new replacement. LOL.

I am just so glad it didn't take down anything else in my PC.

RMX PSU's are usually pretty good. But yeah at least it did not take out the board or GPU

I had read a ton of reviews regarding them and saw nothing that stood out hence why I bought it. Might have just been my luck on getting a bad one but I have to have my daily PC fix so too stubborn to wait for an RMA. Have a wife, 3 kids, and 5 dogs so gaming and beer is my get away!! And hearthstone on my tablet can only get me so far, LOL.

Recently, while playing at night, I had a strange problem with my computer. While in the center of the Star Field, I heard this explosion and also saw the yar.
Overheating of the computer due to fan failure - restarting the computer due to the slightest decrease in voltage in the network; - Electric shocks when touching the computer case or connectors - Small static discharges that disrupt the operation of the system.

Well a good PSU should not take out the PC, and sounds like it didn't so the PSU did it's job. That's why you go for good branded ones because when it does fail it don't fry the system or parts of it.

This don't make it a bad PSU, and the fault could be else were and made the transformer to fail.

Also, to add, the bronze-rated PSUs, along with the white-rated PSUs are more likely to suffer cap plague.

I note that you state you mount the PSU fan upwards - that's the opposite of what the manufacturers recommend, FYI.

I understand that for several reasons it isn't ideal. Especially in my scenario as I have all my rads blowing the hot air in the case so it causes the PSU to run hot. Not just that but I also watercool so not good to have facing up, but I have been quite fortunate for years. I know that the case of the PSU was very warm to the touch that night, maybe even hot to some people but this wasn't something new to me so I didn't think anything of it.

I don't know why but Starfield seems to push my GPU temps much more than Tarkov, Assetto Corsa, or iRacing. These are about the only other games I play on my machine but I never have a hotspot in the red unless playing starfield. Was seeing hotspot of 91C the evening my PSU blew and water temps were around 43C. And before anyone tells me that is way too hot for all the rads I have, my fans all run at 1100 rpm for silence, hence the ton of rads.

But... while removing the PSU last night I was already contemplating placing the PSU at the very bottom of my case so it can face sideways and get fresh air. I just hope the cables on the HX will be long enough to do so else I won't have that luxury. When mounted right under the mobo in my case I can only face upwards unless I mod the case.

You have a single rad in the bottom? i though you would have had the PSU in the bottom with the fan facing toward the R panel, so it draws cool air from outside the case? What was the reason for placing it under the MB?

Like several others have said. Looks like a transformer short between windings. Do not use it, even for testing. RMA it asap.

Every electronics apparatus brake almost new, or at the (near) end of it's expected lifetime. Time between them is usually without problems.

No have total of four rads. The lower compartment in my case houses a 360 rad sideways so PSU won't fit. Can see in the zoomed out pic, the 360 rad in bottom with dust on filter, 360 rad on top pulling up and out, and on the front are the two 220 radiators blowing into case. The case doesn't have holes for facing down in that position so for fresh air must install in bottom compartment.

Corsair RM and HX PSUs are decent. I own a few of them. Might be a little overpriced at best buy, but it is convenient.

Nice, black and red like mine. I'm actually running my 12700k/3080 with only 1 360x60 rad, pic is in the your PC atm thread.
