Q9550's Life/Temp threshold.....

I bought my Q9550 last september, my question is how long is its life running at stock speed and how long is it running at 3.5Ghz 1.16250vcore(bios)?? I want to keep it for at least the next three years and if it can last that long or longer while being overclocked that would be great....i got it to 3.78Ghz IBT stable and the highest temps were 59celcius....thats my next question: whats the threshold for temperature, i want to push it more to see what it can do but after 3.8 i have to start increasing the vcore a lot...thanks

1.1625vcore at 3.5Ghz is really nice. What voltage does it require to run at 3.78Ghz? Don't expect to get the fsb past 450Mhz unless you're lucky, but it sounds like you're not as it requires lots of volts past that. 450Mhz with an 8.5 multi works out to just a hair over 3.8Ghz, so I would just take any overclock near your 3.78Ghz settings without upping the voltage that much.

yea the 3.78ghz was at 445fsb, when i tried 450 then i had to increase and increase the voltage so i stopped....the vcore for 3.78ghz was 1.1875v(bios)....do you know anything about the life of a cpu?

You won't know exactly how long it will last. A stock cpu may last for ages, I still have a p3 667 which I bought in the last decade. OC'ed? As long as its cool, it will run fine. The only way I can see it die is insane clocks and extreme heat/voltage (which you seem to have covered already). But then again, its down to luck really.

My Rig, when running at 4Ghz, idles around 35C and goes up to 55C on load. As a rule, you should try to keep the temps below 60C. The older cores (65nm) can run bit hotter but the 45nm's have a lower threshold.

If you can keep the idle temp below 40C and the load temp below 60C it should last at least 3 years, even with overclocking.

You might want to get coretemp to see what your CPU's VID is, personally i wouldn't go over 0.15V of this value for long periods.

I've managed to get my cpu close to 4.8Ghz with 1.59v, but that kinda voltage isn't meant for 24/7 use, and was a little stupid on my part.

generally the CPU's live forever, its the motherboards that die (VRMs) from overheating due to the extra voltages.

Your mosfets are under the "Ultra Durable" part of the heatsink and the standalone heatsink above the CPU socket. That should be sufficient cooling for them.

just check them with your finger at some point, if they get hot to the touch, consider getting a small fan near them to blow air on them.

still have P4 631 from 4 years i think, it's overclocked at 4ghz with 1.45v on air and still running well
