Memory manufacturer Qimonda claims to have started producing the worlds first 512MB GDDR5 chips. Like past GDDR revisions, GDDR5 increases the maximum bandwidth between a graphics processor and the graphics memory. GDDR5 boasts a whopping 20GB/s bandwidth, up from the GDDR4 bandwidth of 16GB/s. Qimonda claims that GDDR5 improves power consumption by downclocking unused VRAM. Qimonda will release their GDDR5 RAM "sometime in 2008". You can read the full Qimonda GDDR5 briefing here.

So is GDDR going to keep advnacing to like GDDR20 or do ya'll think their going to come up with a whole new system or name Change, I mean think about it GDDR100 :twitch: lol. Well actualy now that I think about, it it kinda does make Sense.

they make it seem like DDR5 has astronomical gains when a very small majority of cards even use ddr4 as their memory atm...but whatever, im always up for less power consumption

So here's an idea! As everyone is just now jumping on DDR3, lets just skip 4 and head straight to 5 next. LoL

eh, i wonder how much gain we'll get from the extra bandwidth, they might as well make it so that the memory gets mounted on top of the gpu core for max bandwidth lol. i wonder if it will be worth the price premium.

I can see ATI taking this right now. GDDR4 is just now starting to get a foothold in the graphics and as was said, not many cards are using it full force. Hell GDDR2 and GDDR3 are still being the choice of many cards. I dont see a need for this right now.

Also, when did Qimonda start producing graphics memory? I though Samsung and one other company handled graphics memory?

yea, its a company called epilida(sp?), but yea qimonda has been making graphics memory for a little while now

they bought out infineon sometime ago

its elpida i think, they are right behind micron for ddr2 memory, didn't know that they did grafix memory though, thought it was like samsung and infinion or something like that

Those figures Reg Hardware posted don't make much sense.
GDDR4 certainly does not offer 16GB/s/IC. Fastest chips from Samsung are 1.4GHz (DDR-2800) providing 11.2GB/s/IC.

The Qimonda GDD5 in question is really 1.8x faster than the fastest GDDR4 (let alone GDDR3) available.
