Wasn't sure were to put this, but it sure is cool.

Does this works on my RX580? ;)

Given the source, I'm gonna say no.... at least that demo. Not to say developers won't try and get AMD involved with additional mods down the road.

The NVIDIA RTX Quake 2 demo features a version of the game that includes real-time ray traced global illumination and reflections, dynamic direct and indirect lighting effects, mimicked physical material light reflection properties, and volumetric lighting effects. One major change that would seem insignificant to gamers raised with more modern gaming experiences is that these changes allow the realistic experience of glass in one of the Quake 2 maps. In the original game, glass looked like a transparent piece of plastic, but the new tech gives it its reflective properties and realistic appearance.

If you port it to DX12, it can ray trace on everything (performance is the question tho).

Its super cool, new life for very old game. Quite interesting what a bit of modern pieces of graphics can do..

Prob the only ray traced game that will run on my GTX 1070 when Nvidia releases Ray Tracing Update.. =P

for people thinking it'll run on their pascals or polaris cards, forget it.
be it metro exodus or quake 2 rtx, you're limited by rays and the quality of light/reflection,the fact it's quake 2 has nothing to do with it.I mean the reflections should be less complex, but still.
look at bf5 performance hit is all the same when you have a scene with reflexive surfaces as well as one that's just grass and dirt with no relections whatsoever.

that said,this is awesome.

Why is Quake 2 used so frequently to show off something new?

Easy to mod. Altho Q3 engine is pretty easy to mod too. But Im not sure how its from licensing point of view, Q2 is maybe completely free?

Bold added for emphasis here.
Probably, but i just copied from the author's git.

Why is Quake 2 used so frequently to show off something new?
According to this author: "Since Quake II is open source and has a long-standing modding tradition, it is a great sandbox for putting academic research to the test in the real world. Particularly, the game has fast-paced action and is played competitively, setting high standards for the performance and robustness of any implemented rendering techniques. Finally, in some sense Quake II is to this day quite a modern game, since it already shipped with complex and artistic light design back when it was first released."

Maybe it's because it's a great way to show off the new tech. A modern game without RTX wouldn't look so different compared to with RTX.

I love what ray tracing adds to games but so far it looks like the current gen doesn't have the horsepower to run games at the frame rate and resolution I'm looking for. Works great for Q2 though.

If this demo is the one i think then its vulkan based, you need a high-end GPU supporting the Vulkan extension VK_NV_ray_tracing.

Here you go link
It's not the same demo. I heard that Nvidia will release this demo soon, but the one you linked to is good as well.

That is pretty sweet!

i play this on my 1080ti and it's actually pretty demanding. Quake 2 was an amazing game for it's time, I really forgot how much fun it was.

Just wondering, what feature in pascal allows rtx to run whereas maxwell can't do it? My 980ti oced beats up on 1070s. Or else nvidia just wants me to buy a used 1080ti just to test it out.
Next year maybe....

Where can I download the RTX version? I only find the q2vkpt...

Thanks in advance
well get a demo or buy the game and unpack the q2vkpt into the main directory.

the final, open source version (the actual Quake II RTX,with improved textures, particle effect ect. etc.) isn't out yet.

I have the original quake 2 from the gold times I was asking for the rtx port (or patch, or whatever) since phanbuey was saying that he plays it.

Thanks.
