Just a real quick question, my friend and I are finding mixed information on this, so I'm hoping someone here has some experience or knowledge. Is it possible to SLI a 9800GTX+ and a GTX260(216)? If so, will the 9800 end up "dumbing down" the 260? Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me out. :)

no sli must be with identical cards minus brand that doesnt matter the only dumbing down sli will do is lower the clocks of the faster card to match that of the slower one

But if it has to be with identical cards, then why would one have a lower clock speed than the other?

ok for example you can sli a bfg with an evga as long as their both 9800GTX's but diffirent companys clock their cards diffirently EVGA may clock the core at 600 while the bfg card may be clocked at 630 at which point the drivers will clock the bfg card down to 600 to match the evga

So for SLI to be possible, the cards have to be built on the same GPU? From what I gather, brand name and clock speeds don't matter, as long as they are using the same GPU (ie: G92+, G200, etc...) right or wrong?

2x gtx260 ( first standard card 575 core , 2nd preoverclocked card 625 for the core) . your cards will run in sli @575 ( slowest speed , not 625 ) The preoverclocked cad will auto downclock to match the standard card speed ) but you can overclock both linked .

Kinda late, but also just because they're built on the same GPU doesn't necessarily mean they will SLI together, They must have the same shader and ROP count.
ie G92 cards
9800GT can't SLI with 9800GTX, 8800GTS, 8800GT, or GTS250. The bios of the card won't allow it.

Well a gtx 260 core 216 can sli with a core 192. Part of what you said is true about the different models.
