I have no idea what it is, but you should be able to take it off because it didn't come with the card.

Maybe you should rename the thread "What the hell is this???" or something so we can get an answer. I'm completely at a loss.

The 6870 is like "if I close my eyes and wish real hard, i'll be a 6990". Sorry 6870, it doesn't work that way D:

IT looks like a PCI extender. I have not seen one in many years though.

Cases used to come with slots along the front so that long cards could be supported at both ends. the front edge of the card would slide into a slot at the front of the case while the back was secured the normal way via teh expansion bracket.

My wildcat 3000 had one of them :)

That makes sense. More sense than anything I can think of anyway. I couldn't figure out why anyone would want a cupholder inside their case when they have a built in one that shoots out of the front. :D

More Info:
apparently it's been pulled from a pre-built, which would make this card OEM.
The guy said cannot be removed...
though he, too, has no idea what it's for lol

it looks like the seller has removed the backplate and just rested it on the card to show no damage on the back of the PCB if you ask me. You need to check the make and see if that invalidates the warranty.

Can you find out who manufactured the pre-built?

Totally looks removeable to me. If the guy cant see how to do it, it just means the screws are on the other side and you would have to pull the heatsink off to remove the extender.

More than likely it's a Dell/Alienware card since they are the only OEM's that ever put the GPU extenders on.

The extender is there to support the card on the other end. Almost all workstations/servers have this, even some RAID cards use extenders.
This is a RAID controller from my server machine.

AFAIK it should be removable (at least it was on every card I came across, but you never know) usually there are bolts holding the extender but I can't see any from that picture if you could get a better picture of the extender itself it would be clear if it's removable or not.
Or you can jut chop it off :p
