qx9770 on air?

How far could i got with a non lapped qx9770 on air stable? i've heard you can do 4.0ghz easy but i don't know i'm running x48 dfi lp dark edition

The x48 was a solid chipset, unless you stumble on a dud of a CPU you should be able to do 4ghz without issues. The max you will end up going on air all depends on the CPU and the Vcore it needs to reach your final OC. I think the general consensus is anything 1.55v+ on Vcore should be under water although some big time air coolers will suffice with the proper fans- like a VenX or D14.

Off topic, unless you are getting a really good price and need the speed, I would stick it out with the Q9450. I mention it a lot, but other than WCG I saw no difference in power day to day from my Q9550 @ 3.4ghz and my i7 860 @ 3.5ghz. I can't imagine an upgrade from 9450 to 9770 would be drastic enough to warrant the price.

Id pass on that. The only way I would buy it is if I was going to sell it to someone else.

I mean say you get it to 4.2 stable, you are essentially paying $250 (minus what you get from selling your Q9450) for 800mhz of performance. The better idea is to save money for either the move to a new platform (AM3, 1366, Bulldozer, etc) or for a different hardware upgrade.

actually i was thinking of parting out my rig and going with a am3 build, but it might take awhile for me to get rid of all this stuff

That is the better idea. The longer you wait and sit on that Sckt 775 hardware the less its going to be worth, best to start selling it now and get moving on

You DFI board is a good board...I love DFI (to bad DFI is done with lanparty). Anyway that motherboard will do 500FSB with no problem. You cpu has a muli of 8. So that will put you at exactly 4.0ghz. I had my DFI P45 running at 515Mhz FSB so it should also be possible for you to hit a higher oc than 4.0Ghz.

Either way from what I have seen from the Q9xxx series is regardless of the cpu max stable oc tends to be right around 4.0Ghz. It's not worth the upgrade to gain the 9x multi. IMO.

For $250, I'd take a qx9770...

My QX9650 did 4.0ghz @ 1.275v. Shouldn't need more than 1.35v for 4ghz for any QX SKT775 chip, unless it's been abused under LN2 or something.

It's not worth the upgrade to gain the unlocked multi. IMO.
