If memory bandwidth equal (I know 290 has 512bit but 780 just 384bit so it can't directly compare memory speed).
, clock equal then which is better ?
Let's say possible OC : R9-290 @ 1100Mhz vs GTX 780 @ 1100Mhz.

Another Q. what is average OC between those card ?
Thanks :)

The GTX 780 is slower clock for clock but clocks better. Doing a proper comparison is impossible thanks to Nvidia's boost algorithms(one of two reason why I will not buy an Nvidia GPU). Now if you go theoretical you can just look at W1zz's review of the R9 290 which maxes out at 947mhz and is slightly faster than the GTX 780 which at stock will boost to 1005mhz (explanation) and stay there for the length of most benchmarks. Now a GTX 780 is almost certain to do 1200mhz but an r9 290 will probably do 1100mhz on stock volts+cooling on better cooling and with more voltage the R9 will probably do 1250mhz at which point a GTX 780 needs to run at 1300mhz+ to beat it in performance but for that you need exotic cooling.

I suggest 780 because its cooler and quieter and more efficient, thats more important than a tiny bit of performance.

the 780 can oc higher than r9 290 but r9 290 faster clock for clock

Judging by benches the GTX 780 is about the same as the R9-290X clock for clock, that's what I got out of lurking hundreds of pages on OCN.

Performance also depends on which engine the GPU is rendering, some engines favor Nvidia while some other favor AMD's GCN.

Boost is a non issue because almost any serious overclocker/enthusiast has that disabled with a modded BIOS, my graphics cards run 1400 Mhz fixed all the time while in 3D, unless there's under 60% load, where they downclock to 1006Mhz.

I'd still get the 780 because it clocks higher, you can get almost 1300 Mhz with stock voltage on new chip's revision.

Just grab the second hand xfx r9-290 yesterday and it can unlock to 290x.
Wonder about missing memory voltage.
And what about aux voltage , i read somwhere that is pll voltage right ?
