ram wont run at stock speed

i got some new ram today drr400
its 2x1gb cas 3 now when i run one stick it runs fine at 200mhz but when i try and run two it wont run above 166mhz

i have used cpuz to get the right timmings so i have changed it to cas 3 and the tras to 8 and even changed it to command rate to 2t but i still cant get it to boot at 200

i have cleared cmos and run everything on defult so no overclocking!!

any ideas?

Crappy memory RMA it. I have seen that before.

Also is your voltage right?

yeh i have changed the voltage to 2.8

hope i dont have to rma it as its from the states and it took 2weeks to get here so its gonna take atleast another 3weeks
 
Yes, it looks like your RAM is bad. I would def RMA it right away.

im going to try and explain how long it has taken and if they can sent the replacement asap. its a good thing i have sold my old ram yet! what do you rekon i should do test both stick and see if only one is faulty?

it is a bit of a pain as i have to take off my cpu cooler everytime as its sooo big
 
memtest86 works very well. You'll have to make a floppy bootable. I am pretty sure you'll see some problems come from memtest with that RAM.
 
Sorry. I have used the same bootable floppy with memtest for about 3 years now. I need to update.
 
will it show errors even if its only running at 166 tho?
 
Manufactured week 84 year 144? Either CPU-Z is reporting it wrong or your RAM is definitely screwed! :laugh:
 
ok well im running some tests now report bk when its done, cheers for the tips so far
 
ok hows this ive run all the test it has been going for ages and it done upto test 4 out of 6 and just kept doing it but said there were no errors.

how can this be?

Hold on, so each stick by itself can run at 400MHz? Then the memory isn't screwed, that's almost certainly your motherboard. Mine is the same - when there are two sticks it won't let me past 333MHz, but that's a problem with S754 mobos I think. Try updating your BIOS and searching the DFI support to see if this is a known problem.

If the sticks can run independently at 400MHz, they're both fine.
 
Had thsi happen to a friend, make sure they're in the right slots. I know you had 2x512 before, but maybe you slotted them into the wrong slots. When he ran two sticks of RAM in slot 1 and slot 3 (non-dual channel on his board), it would only allow 166MHz, but running them in slots 1 and 2 (dual-channel enabled), it would run at the full 200MHz.
I don't know why he slotted them into the wrong slots for dual-channel, but it was running like that for a year and a half until I reliaed it and changed them for him :p

Sometimes the mobo manuals even tell you the wrong setup - that's what it was like for a friend of mine. It's definitely worth moving one of the sticks around to see if that helps. But it certainly doesn't sound to me like you have dodgy memory if each of them can run at 400MHz.
 
well i will try both in different slots, i know there in the right slots atm but i might try the other two and try a new bios even tho its only about 6months old but there might be some fixes, other wise i might see if i can run then in non dual channel as 2g and then if not i will have to rma as they told me it would work fine on my chipset!

I'd say the latter myself (if they can run separately at 200MHz). Either way, an RMA sounds like the best idea. Hope you have better luck with your next sticks of ram :laugh:
