TN's have higher refresh rates so they would be better?
I thought the article was pretty clear, but here goes:
TN
PRO: usually the fastest
CON: worst viewing angles
VA
PRO: best contrast
CON: crushes black tones
IPS
PRO: best color reproduction (doesn't mean that much, they're all pretty accurate)
CON: IPS glow

We can't tell you what's best for you, you need to find a way to see each one in action and decide for yourself.

Which out of TFT and IPS would you recommend?

For performance reasons, the only monitors I recommend are the ones based upon IPS screens from AUOptonics.

US pricing
Acer XB271HU bmiprz ($575-ish)
Asus PG279Q ROG Swift ($635-ish)

This is not the current model .. The used to use the exact same AUOptonics panel, at some point Asus switched from a 10 bit panel to an 8 bit panel

This also is not the current model, its an older model @ 144 hz ... the current model is 165 Hz and the current panel is 10 bit

Be careful how you interpret panel type claims ....

Are the best IPS Monitors better than the best TN Monitors ? Absolutely
Is a $250 IPS Monitor better than $250 TN Monitors ? Absolutely Not.

Be careful about published monitor specs ... The term "Alternative Facts" has become popular in the lexicon these days ... i think it was 1st invented by either PC Fan or Monitor Manufactuers. if you see a fan with published specs of 80 cfm at 1.2 SP, consider yourself lucky if you see 38 cfm at 0.6 SP. If ya see 1 ms on the spec sheet, consider yourself lucky if it tests out at 4 ms

My only concern is the effect on health/eyes and budget is $235.

Just sit arm's length away from your monitor, have some ambient light in the room, and get up to refill your coffee cup every 20 minutes or so and you will be fine.

I am finding TN and VA monitors to be easier on my eyes compared to IPS but maybe it is just the screens I have used or my eyes specifically. I used to get headaches and blurred vision from the IPS PB258Q I used for several years.

I don't think you really have that many choices for monitors, like 99% of the monitors in the market are LCDs
If you really care about the blue light, many LCD monitors nowadays have low blue light mode or adjustable blue light

I agree with this 100%.

But also, I recommend seeing an eye doctor and, if you don't have perfect vision, discuss getting prescription glasses for computer use. That's what I have and they really make a difference. No strain at all and I sit in front of my monitors 5 - 6 hours per day.

Mine are actually special bifocals. The main/top area has a focal length of ~24 inches - the average distance I sit away from my monitors. And the bottom part is for up close work.
Only CRTs? Ummm, no. That is not true. As for flicker, CRT monitors typically have a refresh rate of 60Hz, but many support 75, 80 and some go as high as 100Hz. Most LCD monitors still have a native refresh rate of 60Hz.

Yes, radiation could be a problem, but you really have to sit very close for very long times. They main problem with CRT monitors is that they are analog, have huge footprints, and are heavy, power hungry heat generators. Plus the screens can be dust magnets.

In reality, because CRT monitors display curves as curves and not a series of jagged steps, CRT monitors can impose less stress and eyestrain than LCD displays! Extended up-close exposure to LCD monitors can result in significant eyestrain, head aches, sleep disorders and more.

only those crappy 60Hz CRT's flicker my old MAG did 1024x768 32bpp @ 100Hz or 1200x1024 @ 75Hz so no flicker it also had anti glare coatings and a flat square screen best damn CRT I ever used
the rest I'll agree with

as for which to buy I'd go with either high refresh TFT (including VA) or IPS with blue light reduction Oled are at the moment just to expensive unless you have a whole lot of cash burning a hole in ya pocket

TN panels tend to have better pixel response times, but worse colors and viewing angles.

TN, IPS, and VA can all have high refresh rates. IPS tends to have better color reproduction and worse pixel response times. VA is right in the middle.

Both of my monitors are TN, and I have no issues with their color reproduction, but I don't do professional color work.

Realistically, there are only two modern display techs that are produced, and they are pretty much identical from a health perspective:

TFT, and OLED. OLED costs more and is emissive rather than transmissive, but that should make zero health difference.

Everything else you listed is pretty much no longer manufactured or used (RIP Plasma).

I have no issues viewing my CRT television for older gaming on console.
I have issues with LCD screens though and sometimes i just cannot put my finger on why, like i have 3 monitors, my eyes react differently to each screen even of the same panel type. IPS causes more eye strain for me than TN.

TN panels have no better response time then and a quality IPS. They are just cheaper. You can get a 240 Hz IPS and it will feel better to the eyes

I don't think it makes any difference in the screen type and your health. But to much close activity with children can cause nearsightedness and fatigue

Are CFL/LCD backlit LCD's or LED backlit LCD's better for health/vision?

I think you need to do some very basic thinking here - you're over complicating things.

I recommend you read the article and go for a flicker-free monitor, similar to somethinglike this:

And I get the feeling you really are not willing to accept anything being said. :( And I'm not understanding why.

You been given, repeatedly, a lot of excellent advice but none seem to satisfy you. This is wasting everyone's time, including yours!

We are NOT eye doctors. So I now say forget all the advice you have thus far been given - except what I said in my first here, post #7. That is, go see an eye doctor. A real doctor, as in an ophthalmologist or optometrist (not an optician) - perhaps an eye doctor recommended by your primary care physician (PCM). Discuss ALL your concerns with your PCM and the eye doctor. Get a thorough exam. Then you can go to an optician to get your prescription computer eyeglasses professionally made.

Right. I was adding to your post. Sorry if I caused any confusion. I was definitely referring to the OP.

The problem is not the type of screen used, but settings/content.
Welding will destroy your eye sight pretty quickly, but will not depend on type of material or what form of welding, but if you wear eye protection or not.

The best screen thats emitting blue light will still hurt your eyes.

So you can either switch to a warmer color temperature (making white tend to be more towards yellowish rather than "cold" as in blueish) and that incl ANY screen (phone/tablet etc), or you can wear "computer" glasses that block blue light.

Yeah - those PC shades have been around for a while - some folk on here have raved about them.

just make sure you dont buy into those +50$ (or higher) computer/gaming glasses.
im sensitive to bright light, and wanted something to filter blue/uv light, but without any tint.
got a couple of 20$ ones from amazon, and have to say the work pretty good and i now have some that don't even have a yellowish tint (cheap way of "filtering").

Yeah, if you are willing to spend $50 on computer glasses, definitely see a doctor and get prescription glasses. Tell the doc they are for computer use and they will make sure the focal point is at the correct distance from your nose.
