Without raytracing for AMD graphics cards ... what a shame... The GPU divison is a total mess !

Thanks for the review i'm waiting for a couple more patches until I pick it up. As the Digital foundry video shows there is still work to do on the PC version when its comes to shadows etc where the PS5 looks better in certain area's.

That's really good... and not the first time i've seen it. I'll take those min FPS all day.

Nixxes is typically pretty good about supporting all cards well and in general AMD cards perform well in this.... Must be something else going on.

Thanks for the review. It looks like AMD's 8 GB cards take a bigger hit as the 6700 XT is nearly twice as fast as the 6600 XT in this game which is unprecedented. Even the 5700 XT beats the 6600 and 7600 with ease. It looks like 16 lanes of PCIe are helping the 5700 XT hold on in low memory situations.

Yes, they are pretty good usually, and AMD's cards are performing unexpectedly well in the rasterized portion. I suppose we'll find out when the game is fixed. Still, it points towards a lack of testing with AMD's hardware.

My 2 cents, I feel Techpowerup should really consider consolidating the max (not sure if it is max or average) and min framerate charts together. 1 because is more meaningful to see how much frames it can achieve and how low it can go. 2, the story of Nvidia cards topping the chart can look very different when looking at the minimal frame rates. It seems AMD cards are holding up better looking at the minimal framerate results. Which actually translates to an overall smoother experience. Not siding AMD, but this is an important consideration.

Yep, when the VRAM buffer is insufficient the PCIe bandwidth becomes crucial to performance. If a card is equipped with 8GB and runs on 8x lanes only, it will be f'd.

Thanks @W1zzard for taking the time to test on older cards like the 2080 Ti and 5700 XT as well.

Eight more lanes of PCIe would have occupied a negligible amount of die space for a die that's over 200 mm^2. AMD's penny pinching with their x600 series is pretty silly.

I am not sure if it is the PCI-E lanes at play here. 6700XT is faster than the 6600XT likely because the latter ran out of VRAM since the VRAM requirement is quite high. In addition, the 6700XT have a wider memory bus that will result in a wider memory bandwidth and cache size that is double of the 6600XT. So it could be that this game is sensitive to memory bandwidth. 5700XT again have a 256bit memory bus, so again, leading to higher memory bandwidth.

You're right. I should have worded myself clearly. The 6700 XT is clearly faster because of the additional VRAM. However, even the 5700 XT is faster than the 7600 and that's probably due to the doubled PCIe lanes for the older card. At 1080p, the memory bandwidth is unlikely to hamper the x600 series as they have 32MB of much faster L3 to compensate for the lower bandwidth.

Another data point is the comparison of the 3070 Ti and the 2080 Ti. The 2080 Ti is significantly faster in this game despite having only 1.3% more bandwidth. This suggests that the amount of VRAM is a bigger concern than the bandwidth.

RT isnt worth it in this game. Still looks absolutely amazing without it. My 3090 is good for 2k with everything including RT maxed but with RT off it looks just as good and has better fps in 4k (dlss quality). One of my kids machines has a 4080 and im assuming the game has issues atm because with rt on in certain scenes he gets weird outlines around ratchet that i dont get with it off. Im sure they'll fix that after a few patches so ill give that a pass but god damn are the graphics amazing in this game. It's animated movie quality running in realtime

Except RT not working on AMD cards it's another nice result for 79xx series. And that's even without optimized driver. Those min FPS look very nice.
It will be interesting to see if they can squeeze more out of RDNA3 with future drivers or not.

"the developer confirmed that Radeon RT support is coming after launch, but didn't give any estimate."
That is really sad, why didnt they wait and release the whole game. I don't have a problem with just one sort of upscaler being used whether it is DLSS or FSR (the latter i believe is better for all), but i do have a problem when they release the game without basic functions for the other camp.

The problem is PCIe lane are situated at the edge of a die like most i/o. They maybe didn't had enough space there to put 8 more.

But anyway, if you are beyond ram capacity, it's not really the 8 more PCI-E lane that will do much to save they day. They might transform disastrous framerate into miserable framerate but it won't be enough anyway.

Do you think Nvidia is intentionally blocking AMD RT at launch :O

No, i don't. I think the dev ran out of time and they decided to go ahead with the launch even though not all of the player base could play the game the same, and that is what i am upset about. With upscalers i can turn down setting or use FSR which works on almost all hardware. This though if had an AMD GPU i couldn't play a fundamental part of the game.

Of course, having more RAM would be best. However, more PCIe lanes can still help in edge cases like this game at 1080p. The 5700 XT puts in a much more playable performance than all x600 cards. The die sizes are very similar for the 6600 XT (237) and the 5700 XT (251 mm^2) and should be enough for 16 lanes of PCIe. Here are the minimum fps at 1080p as tested by W1zzard.

Why don't use recently bought RTX 4060 Ti 16 GB to compare against 8 GB version in VRAM bench in Apples to Apples mode? Is the best card to test diferences

Also important would be for TPU to check for texture swapping and texture detail. Many games use it to mitigate the impact of a lack of VRAM but the side effect is that some textures will be blurry as they load in. HardwareUnboxed has demonstrated this happening in multiple recent games on 8GB cards. If you have a benchmark where both cards are set to high detail but the 8GB one is texture swapping or has lower quality textures that's not an apples to apples comparison.

A lot of people seem to be fixated on the performance hit you see in games like the one tested in this article but you also have to consider that there may also be visual quality differences on the exact same graphics settings when running on an 8GB card vs a 10, 12, or 16GB card.

That's fair and logical. I think his point though was to poke fun at the contrast to how Starfield's lack of DLSS at launch is assumed to be for one reason only by contrasting it with this.

R&C is a Nvidia Sponsored title for the PC port... The game doesn't launch with RT (which it has on the PS5), yet Nvidia isn't receiving any media rage? AMD caught hell for a game that isn't even out yet - Starfield.
