Hi All,

So I recently upgraded to a 1440p @ 144hz monitor (Asus ROG Swift PG278QR), at the time I was running an Asus GTX 970 Strix OC but once I had the screen, although it performed fine in some games I noticed some FPS issues in bigger titles.

So I then upgraded to the Asus ROG Strix 1080 Ti OC which gave me some huge FPS boosts and a warm fuzzy feeling. However I have noticed that some of FPS really don't match up with some of the benchmarks I found before purchasing the card, I believe the issue may be related to CPU/RAM however was hoping someone on here may be able to let me know where I may have some shortfallings and provide some recommendations for upgrades?

Current PC
Motherboard: Asus X79 Sabertooth
CPU: Intel 4820K @ 4,798 MHz
CPU Cooler: Corsair Hydro H110
Memory: Corsair Vengeance Pro 32GB DDR3 PC3-14900C9 1866MHz
Graphics: Asus ROG Strix 1080 Ti OC
Monitor: Asus ROG Swift PG278QR
Hard Drives:
1) Corsair Force GT 120GB (Boot)
2) Samsung 840 EVO 250GB (Demanding Games)
3) Western Digital Passport 1TB USB 3.0 (Generic Storage, Non-Demanding Games)

My original plan was to upgrade to a Asus IX Maximus Code, Intel i7 7700k and some G.Skill - Trident Z 16GB DDR4-3600 however I then read up about x299... which to be honest I am a little dubious about. Then I came across the Ryzen 7 series processors which I am now highly interested in.

What I am trying to understand is, where could I use some upgrades to give me some noticeable extra FPS at 1440p? Or are my specs not that bad and should I just wait a while?

Full disclosure, I have around €860 / $970 / £750 for the upgrade and would really appreciate your some assistance in making the right decision.

Regards,
Justin

Edit: Forgot to state memory specs!

Which games are you dissapointed with the FPS in?

IMO your rig should be able to keep up with your GPU in most titles.

PS- feel free to fill in your system specs, it makes it easier for people to respond accurately to you without having to refer to your original post

Thanks for the quick reply, I will fill them in now thanks. The most recent example is Ghost Recon Wildlands, I usually achieve around 60fps which don't get me wrong is decent.. but in benchmarks they seem to achieve around 85fps on 1440p with the same settings. Looking at their test rig the key differences appear to be memory and CPU but can that account for the extra 25fps?

I think youre run into the problem most of us have had. Benchmarks is one thing IRL gaming is something completely else.

Hmm maybe you're on to something... I always felt Guru3d were very honest with their benchmarks however... 25fps seems like a big differential.

Only thing that comes to mind besides a second GPU would be some faster RAM if you can find some at a decent price.

Be aware that FPS are not always constant throughout a game, for instance in Project Cars at Laguna Seca I can pretty much exceed 120 FPS with my settings, at Monaco I'm lucky to exceed 60 FPS for a whole lap with the same settings.

Laguna Seca is in a desert, where as Monaco is in a heavily built up area with a much bigger crowd.

Really not worth upgrading anything before trying to overclock that ram a little more and watch CPU usage

Another GPU, not bad thinking... might be expensive though; my current one cost €960 which would be out of my budget but could always save a bit more I guess. Seems like no one really thinks it's the CPU which would save me the CPU/Mobo upgrades.

Interesting... not something I have attempted before, will look at some guides online and see where I get with this thanks.

They might have run their benchmark at a different location where you are trying to play at. Try Gamer Nexus' benchmarks. They usually tell where they run their benchmarks and how. And I doubt you'd get more FPS numbers with Ryzen as well.

Go to Corsair, find your exact ram kit, record timings down, then find the same ram kit for 32GB but at 2133 and 2400, record those timings and voltage, bump your ram up to 2133 with the timings and voltage for 2133, if stable run that, then try 2400.

Are you sure the games you are running are not the ones on the usb3 drive taking a major hit? Are you noticing stuttering in games?

Make sure your Antivirus program is set to game mode or turned off.

Forgot to say buy something like a wd black (that'll make life so much better on load times for bigger games)

Well this is embarrassing... turns out I never even enabled the XMP profile so it was running at 1333mhz, so far I have it at 2000mhz and it seems stable...

Will give this a try later and see if I can get up over 2000mhz stable thanks!

Think this would be well worth investing in, as the Passport is understandably slow for game loading times.

I'd think you could hit 2133 or 2400mhz with that kit. Mine goes at 1866mhz for XMP but I'm running at 2133.
