Resizing partiton problem

My winxp install seems to have a lot of problems, like system errors when I use standby, and other weird things that seem to come from use over time. So I decided to format and reinstall windows. I didn't want to lose some of the files I have, so I decided to create a seperate partition and move files I want to keep to it, then format the main partition and reinstall windows on that one. I'm using partition magic, and I try creating a new partition with the wizard, and it tells me it needs to reboot in order to resize the old one. So I click yes, and when it starts up it goes to the boot screen with the blue bar moving from left to right under the windows xp logo, just like normal, but instead of going to the login screen, it just goes to a black screen and does nothing. It will keep doing this every time, until I choose the "last known configuration that worked" option. Then it starts fine, only with no new partition. I'm not sure why this could be. Does anybody have any idea what this could be? Any suggestions would be really helpful. Thanks!

Try using QTParted instead, I've never had problems with that. And always defragement before resizing partitions, it's risky and you could lose data and then we won't be able to help you. It would be better for you to back it up to DVD/ another PC on a network if you can.

Well it would probably be better to buy another harddisk. Thats my opinion though.

Thanks for the help, I managed to fit all the files I wanted to keep on some flash drives that were kicking around. I did a format and clean re-install of XP, and it does everything fine now. I guess it was just a problem with my old install.
