I was reading something about the 8800GT's fan not kicking in when left on Auto and resulting in hot cards and problems, so I've had it set at 100% in RivaTuner. Lately its getting too annoying as this card is very audible to me above 55% (Yes, I'm going deaf). Anyway, I see that its locked to adjust the settings, but I basically wanted to adjust the Auto settings in RivaTuner. In RivaTuner/Fan I turned on AutoFanSpeedControl to 1 like the help tooltip told me to do, but beyond that I wasn't sure how to adjust the settings and I didn't want to fool around and mess something up.

The help actually reads..

This bitmask allows unlocking both read and write access modes for the automatic fan speed adjustment rule on LM63 and ADT7473 compatible fan controllers.

Is the 8800GT able to do this? I'd really like the fan speed to be relatively low while the card is cool, and kick up to 100% when it gets above a certain temperature.

Did you check before whether your fan had been kicking in or not?

Maybe your card is normal and isn't affected by this problem.

As regards your question - I don't have an answer but I will be watching this thread as it's likely I will be needing an answer myself too when my 8800GT arrives.

Wait........ I think I found the answer! :)

Ah this was absolutely perfect, thanks so much. I'm not sure if auto was working for me but I still wanted to configure it my own way. Now my card stays cool and quiet pretty much all the time. On a side note, is there a way to do something like this for a CPU fan? I disabled in the BIOS the fan stuff so it stays 100%, because without it, it was getting too warm for my liking. But if I could create profiles for CPU temps as well that'd be awesome. Is it possible?

Actually I've encountered a problem, the profiles only activate and load correctly when I'm viewing the hardware monitor in RivaTuner. When I have RivaTuner minimized the the icon tray they're not loading when the card hits the temperature. How can I fix this?

Edit: Nevermind, I didn't have background monitoring on. Now it works fine. But the question remains if a similar thing can be done with CPU fan and temps?
