Router installation question...

I bought a wireless netgear router for our home computers. One has a copy of Windows ME, it is the computer attached to the internet. I can't get the thing to work. I try the instructions of turning everything off, turning the modem on for two minutes, turning on the router, then the computer. The modem (DSL) lights up like it is connected to both the computer and the internet, but I can't load the web page to setup the router software.

Anybody have some experience here?

BTW the computer is attached by a cable rather than the wireless card.

I set up my own home network, granted it isn't wireless, so I might be able to help. Just to make sure, your setup should be as follows:

outside_line --> dsl modem --> router --> PC

IIRC, when I installed my router I had to use the install cd that came with it. After that was finished, I typed in the IP address of the router, and set everything up. Did yours come with a cd or anything extra like that?

No I did not get a CD I bought it used for $5.00. I seen the site mentions a "smartwizard" or something like that. I see nothing to download that will help me either. Maybe I am out of luck.

I actually figure the wireless part does not matter as I have nothing wireless on it yet.

He's right, & you'll have to probably use PPoE & bridge your DSL modem into whatever NAT router it is you use...

Fact is, I had to do this recently w/ my WESTELL unit, into my LinkSys BEFSX41 NAT true firewalling CISCO technology bearing router.

(Bit of a pain, but now, it works)



* Some DSL modems DO HAVE firewalling & NAT built into them, already... if you use a WESTELL unit for DSL? It does already!

P.S.=> That said, why'd I have to do what I did (binding in a NAT router by LinkSys into the mix)? Well, I paid for it, & wanted to know EXACTLY how it was done as well, for my own reference... plus, I have to admit, I know that CISCO tech is largely safe & proven pretty well, & so is LinkSys (now owned by CISCO iirc)... apk

ah yes PPoE...that was the word i was looking for, it was on my tongue, but couldnt spit it out....

LOL, don't sweat it - I constantly forget details (even in my "Encyclopedia Brittanica" sized posts)... too many ACRONYMS in this field & others (PkZip'd English, lol!).

I think in order for the post starter to accomplish this, he IS going to have to call his ISP/BSP, because there are SOME things in this (like the username & password) you can forget over time, in order to log into their private 10.x.x.x networks... I know I had to, I just PLAIN forgot it!

(It is some 'mismash' scramble username & password, which I changed the latter one, but left the former - believe me, it was NOT a username I would have chosen, lol!)

* Anyhow... good luck post starter!

(Now - you have SOME idea of what you'll probably have to do, & go thru... not that bad, when you have those support techs help you, & THAT is what they get paid for anyhow!)

P.S.=> I will say 1 thing though - to hookup a cablemodem into a linksys or netgear router is 1/10th the effort... just plug it in, & go... but, most cablemodems don't have NAT built into them, that I can recall @ least! apk

Ah, same setup I have, same BSP (broadband service provider) too, so... call their tech support up, find out your login name & password (if you forgot it, I did it had been SO long) & then tell them to connect you to their router support folks (in my case, LinkSys) & have them setup a PPoE (point-to-point over ethernet) bridge on the WESTELL, & then to set your router as your firewall, after the WESTELL is bridged to it.

It isn't that bad, but w/ out the username &/or password for the VERIZON network, you can't do it, & also w/ out knowing what it is you are doing.

By the way, again, the WESTELL DSL modem DOES have firewalling capabilities, just so you know & are aware of that.
