RTX 4090: no price drop until when?

Assuming Nvidia doesn't release a 4090ti will the 4090 be at the same price until the 5xxx series launches? If AMD were to come out with a part that challenged the 4090 at a lower MSRP might that convince Nvidia to lower the price on the 4090's?

At this rate the 4090 is totally unchallenged at the top, Nvidia has no incentive to release the 4090Ti in a hurry or drop 4090 pricing. They use top binned AD102 chips for the RTX 6000 Ada professional GPU right now too, but I'd imagine they have a planned 4090Ti for maybe ~12 months from now, give or take a couple.

Any AMD card would need to conclusively beat it at everything which is unlikely as they would need to release a new much larger more expensive die.

There is a much higher chance of a 4080 price drop but even that isn't likely given it doesn't seem to be selling very well and they still haven't dropped it.

Keep in mind Nvidia pretty much owns the professional market to the point they can just drop any unused dies on that and likely sell them at much higher margins then even the overpriced 40 series.

At this point I wouldn't hold my breath for price drops till 50 series is announced and they need to clear stock then again they mignt just place it on top of ada like they did with 40 series and ampere.

You might see the price drop if and releases the. 7950xtx and if the performance is near the 4090. Then nvidia will release the 4090ti and claim the title most powerful gpu. Then 6months later nvidia will announce the 5080 and 5090

At this rate, and given what AMD has effectively been quoted saying, there will not be a new RDNA3 card that is built to challenge or exceed the 4090, the best you can hope for is a higher clocked refresh with faster memory like the 6950XT.

Even if AMD could make up the deficit and release a card that's a ~match for a 4090 in raster, Nvidia is unlikely to lower prices due to the much richer feature set and RT performance, they'd just release a 4090Ti to push even higher heights at higher costs imo.

EDIT @80251 : May I ask why it's necessary for AMD to outdo the 4090? the 7900XTX is already a kickass GPU by most measures, and it's much cheaper, surely it already broadly hits the performance targets you want if a 4090 can, or is it about being faster than Nvidia?

i get the impression correct me if I'm wrong the only reason you want amd to come out with somthing good is so that you can get an Nvidia gpu for cheaper.... This is the main problem with the current gpu market even when AMD has the clearly better product most people still buy Nvidia. Amd typically competes better in the low end to mid range at least for the last decade. I still remember people buying 1050/1050ti over the RX 570 even though it was clearly better

6900XT/6950XT came close but the RT was terrible.

If Amd ever releases a flagship that's clearly better Nvidia I'll buy it at the same time if that ever happens they will charge within 10% of what nvidia is charging. They aren't a charity if they could charge 1600 usd for the 7900XTX they would.

The last decently priced nvidia flagship was the 1080ti but at this point it performs similarly to a 3060 that will never happen again. Now even the midrange cards cost more.

Did AMD or ATI ever have a GPU that outperformed Team Green? I always bought AMD/ATI because they were cheaper than Nvidia, then I made the mistake of buying a Gsync monitor...

Short-lived and if you only count single gpu cards yes.

I owned both the vanilla 7970 and the 680 and at least in sli I preferred the GTX 680 but technically with one card the 7970 Ghz edition was king by like 2%

So you can then buy a 4090.

Great, , , big sarky thumb style.

Buy the 4090, or the 4080 wtf, your not buying an AMD GPU so just sign up for the future your pining for now, roll around in it and save these AMD should be trying to beat Nvidia so I can buy Nv cheap debates for the toilet, where they belong.

When retailers start to clear the stock a few months ahead of rtx5000 announcement. Same for the entire 4000 line-up. I mean, unless AMD pulls something on the level of HD4850/70 price/performance shock in the midrange, and even then I doubt it, it's a low-margin market down there anyway, so AMD can have it if they want. Just spend the money now if you want to play something and you need a 4090.

It's entirely possible that the 4090 Ti will be more expensive then the 4090. In today's market there's no guarantee of price drops. People thought there was going to be a massive glut of GPUs on the market after the lastest crypto crash akin to prior crashes but unfortunately AMD and Nvidia controlled supply to ensure that doesn't happen. The GPU market is basically a cartel divided between AMD and Nvidia and all PC gamers are being held hostage.

When the demand gets saturated. But even then it's a flagship, the backbone that holds the price structure together. Starting at 2299 EUR six months ago to 1739 EUR now. Constantly dropping and only 10% is could be attributed to the USD/EUR, so 2079 adjusted. Considering 5070 Ti has less memory is it really worth the wait.

The 4090 price is not going anywhere this year. Next year...
I assume in Q3-Q4, the 4080 will go at 999, so the 4080Ti can be sold at 1199.

Yep, since mining didn't come back, it's highly likely price cut comes.
Be reasonable, even if you were Nvidia, you wouldn't want to set fair prices so that miners could gulp in the cards and then resell them.
Also covid is almost nerfed.

Towards the end of the generation when the 5090 is readily available, you may begin seeing used 4090s for 800 to 1K, more or less the price the 3090 is now. Being halo cards and so far ahead of the curve, it might take a while longer. Gamers have shown that they're impatient and willing to pay regardless, the 4090 has greatly outsold every other graphics card of this generation combined.

I cannot afford halo GPU upgrades anymore. If they're going to hover at the $1500 to $2000 USD range, I am just going to lower myself to the 70 Ti segment and go on my merry way. Either way I am skipping Ada at this point, unless I get a discount 4090 Ti next year... which is next to impossible on the probability scale.

I got tired of waiting for an FE model so I decided to just grab one. I keep my gpus for 3.5-4 years so the price wasn't an issue honestly.

2 years at 4k and then typically 1.5-2 years at 1440p give or take. I just retired my 4 year old 2080ti and even though that card costed quite a bit I definitely got my money's worth. The fact that I got 450 usd for it selling it locally was just a bonus.

The 5070ti will likely offer 4090 performance you'd hope so in 1.5-2 years you'll be able to get that performance for 999 usd I guess with how things are going.

Yeah. I've always purchased halo cards and upgraded them almost every generation. But it seems that these days may very well be coming to an end.

In the past 10 years, I've owned the OG Titan, then I went with a duo of ultra-high-end GTX 980 designs (EVGA Kingpin and a Galax HOF which I ran in SLI), did a long, educational and very productive stint (I say this in a positive light, mind you) with AMD, with dual R9 Fury X's, a Radeon Vega Frontier Edition, then a VII (you can see how much I loved HBM designs!), and in 2020 I sold my AMD cards and purchased the RTX 3090 on the launch day. I've kept it since. I meant to buy the RTX 4090 when it came out... but then it did at such an outrageous and unaffordable price.

One can even argue, the 3090 was also $1500 when it launched! But that's very much an America-centric perspective, the rest of the world hasn't been as fortunate. I often have to explain that we don't have the luxury of a Micro Center in every corner, besides, EU, LATAM, ANZ and ESEA markets have all seen a comparable increase in price, and what was already extreme and outrageous becomes unsustainable, especially without someone to pay huge bucks for my current card because they're gonna mine on it.

AMD's consistent failures to hit performance targets and myriad software issues (RDNA 2 notwithstanding, it was a solid lineup, perhaps with the exception of Navi 24 products - drivers sucked but have seen great improvement ever since, to the point I openly recommend anyone buy a 6900 XT for a nice price today) in the past few generations really hasn't helped things. That's not what we want to see - we want them neck and neck, just like Ryzen vs. Core at every segment right now. That way, we would see better prices, a race for driver features, and NVIDIA wouldn't be stingy, two-faced liars withholding functionality from existing GPUs because they want to upsell their expensive junk no matter what the damage to their reputation may bring, after all, if we want a serious GPU product, there's nowhere else to go right now.

I owned both the vanilla 7970

Many moons ago the 9800pro was very hard to beat and the HD5870 was quite destructive as well.

As for OP I see no reason why Nvidia has to lower the 4090 as of yet. It still seems to be selling so why would they?

AMD on the other hand has just dropped the 7900XT by $100. This is the only price drop of recently released GPU's I'm aware of atm.

I've kinda just purchased whatever looked interesting to me.

My main systems from the last 8 years. Unfortunately any benchmarks prior to that I lost when a Gigabyte motherboard housing a 4790K died and took all my drives with it. GPU/CPU survived though but sold them off when I grabbed my 5820K based system.

Kinda wish I still had my 680/780/7970/290x benchmarks.

Prior to 2010 I never ran any benchmarks and a computer was just a gaming computer I didn't really pay attention to the parts.

As hard as I've personally been on the 4070ti/4080 people should just get what they can afford as long as it offers a meaningful upgrade..... Even a 1080ti is what like 80-90% slower than a 4070ti at this point. Flagships are cool and all but life is more important than worrying about stuff we can't afford. Even me doing the 4090 upgrade priced me out of updating the rest of my system something in the past I would have normally done.
