is the Ryzen 1800x worth the upgrade over Core i7 3770k?

my currecnt system is

- Core i7 3770k Overclocked @ 4.5GHz (stable)
- 32GB of corseair 1600 oc @1833 (stable)
- Dual GTX 1080TI's in SLI
- Asus Maximus V Extreme
- Two 2TB Evo Pro SSD's * Raid 0 Dedicated Areca Raid Card*
-850watt PSU (platinum)

everything runs nice, gaming at 4k is my goal and it does a decent job at it atm

THIS is purly a gaming rig nothing else

would I benefit from dropping the Core i7 3770k and going with the Ryzen 1800x

im not asking if its worth it from a monetary standpoint, more 'is it worth' it from a performance standpoint? even if i giand 20% performance with this upgrade monetarily id be ok with that?

jsut dont want it to be essentially the same thing after all the work lol, and cant seem to find how well my 3770k holds up agains the new hardware when it comes to gaming

would love some feedback :) thanks guys

Maybe some better minimum fps, but I think gaming performance is mostly the same on most games. Now, I think the future proof approach for newer games can help with an octa core in the future.

Why not just get a 8700k? Its close to the same cost as a 1800x system and will be faster then your 3770k.

honestly if im going to upgrade it will be to to the newest architecture new ram new mobo everything if i was going to go with intel id most likly opt for an i9

i just figured id look at ryzen 1800x at that price point i have one sitting here from a server build i was doing, that i was about to return and thought 'hey is it worth using this over my current config' :)

I wasnt really thinking of upgrading my rig until just a few min ago so i thought id ask and see if it would be worth ripping apart my rig right now lol

8700k would be better for gaming compared to the i9 CPUs.

Just wait for Ryzen 2 or if you find a good deal get a i7 8700k .
The 1800x just for gaming don't have single core performance as the i7 8700k .
Ryzen is going to be supported for some years too so that depends on your upgrade path too.

I’d go R7 1700 OC between 3.8-4GHz and it will perform solid

Well honestly if you playing games only on 4K you not going to benefit nothing at all if you switch on Ryzen 1800x even on lower resolution the difference is probably negligible, now when it comes to the single core performance this 2 CPU´s are almost on par and yes straight of single core performance atm is still most important for gaming.....So NO IF you just want to play games you not going to have any better experience with that Ryzen, off course if you want to do other things like editing or something else where you can benefit from those 16 threads as in heavy multitasking for example maybe you want to play games&Record&stream&edit in the same time then yes go for the Ryzen you will not regret.......

Save the money you'd spend on platform upgrade and use it when there is something really dramatic released. Or use it to upgrade graphic cards instead since they'll get (again) outdated first...

If you are running an i7 3770k @ 4.6 Ghz right now, don't waste your time until you are really seeing performance dips in your gaming. You already have sufficient threads so the 8700k won't help you much there, the IPC gap isn't tremendous and your OC will top out at 400 mhz over your current one. If its 20% in some edge cases that you might theoretically win, then I'd call that being very optimistic.

At 4K it becomes 100% irrelevant because you are GPU limited anyway. If you were still pushing 1080p/120-144hz then yes, probably you would see that performance. Otherwise, no.

Ryzen at 4.0-4.1 Ghz is a sidegrade btw, no matter how you twist it.

I only upgrade and spend decent $$$ if I know I am going to see a minimum 15-20% improvement in performance, IMO it's just not worth the costs of a whole new platform so I would wait a bit until something warrants those costs.

your at 4K so CPU performance isnt a big deal, just get what ever is cheaper oor stick with what you got, you probably see no real difference in games if you go ether the 8700K or 1800X to be honest

at 4K i will say stay with I7 3770K or if new CPU. You will ne better of with I7 8700K.

Games prefer better IPC and high core clocks over lots of cpu cores/thread. While Ryzen 1800X has more cores and threads it also has lower IPC and core clocks + lower oc potential they max out at 4 to 4.2 GHz. I7 8700K may has lower core counts but has better IPC and higher core clocks + better OC potential (result of 4.7 to 5 GHz is not impossible) is what you want for gaming for bedst possible gaming performance.

1800X would have been a better choice if you where also converting video, workstation load and such things that really benefits from multi core CPU´s and that also applies to I9/X299 CPU´s.

For purely gaming I7 8700K is the king.

your at 4k so your gpus are the biggest factor in gaming right now not your cpu. your system is pretty solid. tbh tho i would sell it now and upgrade while you still can get a good price for the mobo+cpu+ram. its not that its a bad setup its just getting old.

you are all Aces's guys THANKS for the feedback

- money isn't really a make or break factor in this for me, my upgrade cycle is pretty much when ever I feel that there is something worth upgrading to, ( from the comments it seems the consciences is that its not worth the upgrade to the 1800x from a performance stand point , I would have no issue at all dropping money on the 8700 but as meny have pointed out for purly gaming my 3770k @4.6ghz doesnt bottleneck playing anything out there atm? am i correct?

so as a few of you have pointed out, it makes it ( from a performance stand point) pointless to upgrade, even to the 8700k, seems I may be better served just waiitn to see the latest offerings in 2018?

RAZEN 2 sounds promising?!

although I have always been an intel guy, so heres hoping intel has some surprises for us moving forward, its a shame that an edifice that pioneered power processing has so little to offer in terms of upgradability over the last few years, ( meaning that a 3rd gen core i7 offering from 5 years ago still has more then a leg in the race compared to the newest offerings) or maybe is a testament to how ahead they actually were at the time that they are having a hard time beating themselves lol <--- OK that was a 'doc emmett brown' , back the future head spin moment there I think :p

either way My newly ordered, MUCH NEEDED and eagerly awaited iMac Pro has a 10 core xeon http://d.pr/i/dS9CSq <-- so as the say ( just when I thought i was out they.... :p lol)

1 more week to go..quivers lol

-upgraded my 2015 5k iMac with the new iMacPro --> https://d.pr/i/Bmryeq
-upgraded my plex server from some i7 itration or another with the new Ryzen 1800x so i can FINALLY transcode 4k on the fly! --> https://d.pr/i/4HqdRy
-felt like wanted to give my gaming PC some love in the process! ---> https://d.pr/i/jNWE8P

but i guess that will have to wait a bit longer, i dont know whats wronger, the fact that I want to spend the money but there is nothing worth the buy! OR the fact that we have goten to the point now that waiting for things that might add minimal margins in performance is a thing, :p lol

anyway guys thanks alot, love this forum, will defiantly hang around
