I dunno what "PITA" is but yeah its going to be a real pain to clean up anything that falls down the sides.
PITA = Pain in the "arse"

It will be no worse than on an Nvidia GPU
How is it worse than this, where cleaning can destroy a resistor?

If you dont use insane amounts of paste, you'll never have a problem.
It looks like its going to be super easy to just wipe it out with a cotton bud, called a Q-tip by people who don't drink tea.

Use the spread method, and you'll be problem free.

Q-Tip is the Brand Name for Cotton Swabs

@A Computer Guy

AM5 is not out yet,

Worrying is like rocking in a chair, you are doing something but getting no where. Let the product release and let people who know wtf they are doing do the testing first (this doesn't mean you)

So YOU WORRY TOO MUCH

Well, clean up sure isn't going to be as easy as it used to be.

You worry too much.
Cleaning a gpu die is way more ....pita and kind of risky.

Q-tip is *one* brand name for them.
It's so very odd when places (countries etc) start calling a product by one brands name, there are still people who call every phone an iphone, and every mp3 player an ipod... it gets weird.

Anyway, this shouldnt be an issue - even with coolers and their bodgy stock paste applications, they're always thin layers. It'll be weird but not too bad, and people using conductive TIM's can always use varnish on those little resistors or whatever they are

Nothing some 99% isopropyl alcohol and a cotton ball can’t handle

Do you drink Cola then? :)

Really though, unless using drastic amounts of conductive pastes, it shouldn't be an issue - and if you are doing that you should know enough to seal the edges. If it comes to that, Alder Lake also has exposed pads/SMDs around the edges of the IHS. Click to enlarge.

I drink Pepsi. But I don't call it coke.
Q-tips are American only, I had to include that brand name as it always devolves into... well, this conversation, if I don't.

The only paste thats fun to clean up is liquid metal, as that usually involves sanding

An on topic thought is, even if paste ends up in those gaps... who cares? It won't affect performance in any way, we can ignore it. We might even get fancy coolers or waterblocks that fit perfectly around them for some bizarre reason like lego clicking together

I could have sworn I seen this a month or so ago where someone had a delied 7000 series but it had solder

Hi,
From what I see yes it will
Guess liquid metal is a no go

I wonder if we'll see third party plastic brackets that sits around the lid, inside (not under) the socket mechanism, with eight tabs pointing inwards.

NO. I'm not saying that it's needed, or even useful. Possibly even a bad idea, but as history shows, that won't stop anyone from trying to sell it.. :D

Honestly I think it’ll be fine.. no different than anything else.. just go easy on the TIM.. maybe this is AMDs way of saying there really is such a thing as too much :D

If you're that hot n bothered...

Just use q-tips carefully if you want to get the remains away. Personally I don't clean GPUs (where there are SMDs like @Mussels said) that perfectly, I just make sure that the die is clean.

I'm curious about how many people are going to use the cut outs for pliers and try to rip the IHS plate off. Cause you all know some moron is gonna do it. haha.

I'm going to guess wiping isn't going to change much.

But 1 million threads = "How to get TIM out from the cracks!?"

lol.

Common sense should go a long way.

Not true, but who cares.

Won't be a problem at all except maybe if one uses too much liquid metal. Solvents are amazing.

OCD person yes. But the IHS is fairly thick, so lets hope the TIM just barely goes over the edge. Being forced to go in every one of those violin cutouts to make them perfectly clean would drive me mad. Or maybe I get addicted doing it who knows. it would be a waste of time if it takes too long.

If you're that hot n bothered...

Honestly that stuff is a life saver for when I get in a "hot mess" with thermal paste.
