Samsung is Preparing Exynos SoC with Radeon GPU for Next-Generation PCs

In 2019, AMD and Samsung have announced that they will be joining forces to develop a new class of mobile SoCs, carrying the Exynos name and having a Radeon GPU inside. These Exynos SoCs could be used for almost everything that needs a low-power processor. While the original plan was to have these processors run inside Samsung's mobile phone offerings, it seems like there is another application for them. If the rumors coming from ZDNet Korea are correct, we are in for a surprise. According to the source, Samsung is preparing to use the Exynos SoC with Radeon graphics in the company's next-generation laptops lineup.

While there is little to no information regarding the specifications of the said system, we can expect it to be a fully Samsung-made laptop. That means that Samsung will provide display, RAM, storage, battery, and other components manufactured by the company or its divisions. This laptop is expected to replace Samsung's Galaxy Book S, which currently uses Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx SoC. The new PC is going to be Windows 10 based system. For more details, we have to wait for the announcement.

It's a logical development.

I wonder when Nvidia will finally do this move too. I am waiting them for over 8 years.
Probably they can't do it right now. They have first to know if they will finalize ARM's buyout or if the obstacles will be to big to bypass.
 
Funny, the Adreno(anagram of Radeon) is based from ATi's old mobile Imageon media chips

It's very interesting AMD has gotten their foot in so many doors no matter what happens they'll always sell their IP/products to someone.

Apparently you missed the part where Samsung is already doing it, albeit using 8cx chips.

You know, Chromebooks, ARM powered MS Surface and Samsung Galaxy laptops with mobile CPUs existed before Apple created the M1 powered Macbook. Who is copying who?

Well there were music players, phones and tablets before, ipod, ipad and iphone but its Apple who made them so popular that made a market out of it.
Same way for ARM based laptops even though were some before none of them made a splash to create a sizable market.
So yeah others are trying to grab a share of a market that Apple created all the time.

That question is dumb. We all know others are always copying Apple. They're just doing it before Apple launches their products, so it doesn't look suspicious :D

Which weren't theirs, but the Exynos is an in-house design, the point I was inferring to when relating to the M1.

I do know, that those were not mainstream and the x86 variants are.

Exynos is no longer an in-house design, it uses standard ARM cores now. The only "custom" here is pairing standard ARM cores with standard AMD CUs.
 
So basically a Samsung Galaxy with a better GPU in a laptop form with more built in connection and upgrade options. That seems pretty legit to me if the price fine.

Not necessarily a Samsung Galaxy, I'm pretty sure a laptop can accommodate more cores than a phone can.

I agree, but same premise with a fair amount of consideration towards battery life being a mobile part. They defiantly have greater flexibility on the die size and cooling considerations for certain so I'd expect a bit higher delta of performance and better sustained performance.

I agree. Apple is in the process of replacing all of their mainstream lineup with arm ISA chips. They aren't making 1 or 2 extremely expensive, overpriced "5G/LTE flagships" (some of which are also offered with Intel Lakefield SKUs in the same line/chassis). That's the difference, IMO. Apple is all-in, whereas MSFT is still diddling around, mostly wasting time.

Qualcomm is using custom cores. You don't go for custom if you can't build something better than standard/off-the-shelf.
 
Qualcomm has done pretty well in terms of custom designs too with Snapdragon. It'll be interesting to see what they come up with at 5nm whenever they get access to 5nm node process.
 
I'm hoping for a solid quality Android portable from Samsung using RDNA; so I can just off-load the few mobile games to it from my smartphone.
