What is it?

Its 10-20% larger than a standard DVI-i plug

It has the same ## of pins

Its not an apple plug or the old ATI radeon 2x vga adapter

It goes from a larger DVI-i style plug to 2x VGA

now to find a use for it....

@cdawall: its not a DVI cable its larger, isn't shaped like one, and if it was, it would be a DVI-i

they are on some quadro/fire GL workstation cards.

VESA Enhanced Video Connector and VESA Plug and Display (a.k.a. M1-DA) both used this connector with slightly different pin assignments. These schemes combined VGA or digital video, audio, FireWire, and USB signals into a single
connector.

Defunct, obsoleted by DFP and later DVI

Here's one for you guys. It's a similar topic so I figured I'll ask now since we have some of the experts attention.

I work in a local PC shop and the other month we ordered the usual DVI-I to VGA adapters. Now this is a pretty common part that we order from our supplier on a regular basis.

But this time something is different. They sent us 2 of these adapters but they lacked the extra R,G,B,Sync pins. You know the 4 pins that are located 2 above, and 2 below the slot to the far side. Basically the extra pins that make a DVI-I, a DVI-I! So it was basically male Dual Link DVI-D to female 15-pin DE-15 D-SUB. That's right, DVI-D to VGA!

Now I know how these DVI-I to VGA adapters work. I know they don't convert digital to analog or anything of the sorts. They require the analog video to be passed through the extra pins in the DVI-I connector. So I look at these things and right away think WTF? These wont work!

So my boss (who doesn't understand these things) says are you sure? Why would they make this? Why would they send us this? It must work! Go try it! So of course I try it showing him every possible combination I could think of. DVI-D from onboard to a VGA monitor, DVI-I from a video card to a VGA monitor. My boss says, hrm. What about going the other way? From VGA on a video card to DVI on a monitor? Once again I know it wont work but I show him anyway. Pluging the adapter in the female DVI port on a monitor and running the VGA from the same video card. Of course as I suspected. Nothing works.

Now here's the crazy part. Our supplier swears they work. "They work on everything we try here" and "We sold like 5,000 of these to people" they say!

BULLSHIT!

So we sent them back and said they didn't work and that we wanted a credit for them and they end up sending us two more back instead. Sheesh.

But now why do these adapters even exist? I repeat male DVI-D on one side and female VGA on the other side. Looks just like the typical DVI-I to VGA adapter that comes with your video card. But without the extra 4 pins that make DVI-I, DVI-I!

This adapter must exist for some reason? There must be some odd application where it actually works? But I can't figure out what that would be!

Its called a DB59 adapter. It does not actually have 59 pins so not sure why it is called that. Mainly found on SFF dell systems, I have a 2400XT card that uses that style, and sometimes fix SFF dell systems that use it. It is not a format restricted to dell AFAIK, but I have only seen it on dells.

EDIT: here you go

http://www.ebay.com/itm/DELL-DB59-Dual-VGA-Adpater-/110731613451

BTW that price is WAY high. I bought 5 2400XTs including the DB59 cables for twice that 2 years ago.

The db59 uses all round pins, and doesn't have the large flat bar on one side. Its just solid pins....

This is NOT a db59 because I have one of those too....

DB59 is it really LFH? Low Force Helix? I've got them on few Matrox Parhelia cards...
