The Sennheiser HD 660 S is a direct successor to one of the most legendary hi-fi headphones of all time, the HD 650. With a price tag of $500/€500, does it have what it takes to carry on the legacy?

The H58X only costs $149.99 and sounds 95% as good as the 660S. See review below: sennheiser only changed the foam... its the same driver... lol... you just remove the foam and its basically a 660S...

How do these compare to the 6XX and what justifies the price increase?

Its not same as 58X. Sure its very similar, but not exactly the same. Question is usually only, if someone can notice difference or not.

Anyway, since I own DT880, I dont care. :D

HD58X has better bass, and when you remove the foam it sounds almost the same as 660S vocally... $500 vs $150... ummm yeah.... same driver, same build...

I'm assuming factory tuning means nothing here?

If you already have the 6XX, I'd say no. They are less than half the priceand unless your other equipment is damn high-end, I doubt you'll find that much of a difference.

I'm not sure to be honest, I just know that when you take the foam out of the HD58X which is not in the HD660S, it sounds almost identical.

Well maybe this line is different, but the entire HD 5XX line used the same driver and was simply tuned differently (higher end ones with more care / less automation)

Still no denying bang for buck wise, Jubilee wins hands down.

I liked these in the shop when trying to pick my next headphones. I ended up going with the Sundara tho. I preferred the flexibility of the lower impedance (while they are primarily for music listen on PC, its nice to be able to drive them with just a controller when couch gaming at night too). And also the hinges are metal, I have had plastic ones crack in the past! Genuinely not "used and abused", I have no idea how it happened, and when your paying half a grand or more that should not even be a factor!

Thanks for the review, it's nicely done!

Shame about the lack of bass... Starting to roll off at 80Hz is far from sub-bass territory, and has stopped me from considering these.

I like my music natural, but I insist that if it's present in the recording, then I want it present at my ears.

Spotify embeds are in my review to let everyone hear the songs I'm discussing. The only other option was to use YouTube links for the same purpose. I can't embed my FLAC collection or even Tidal Masters/Deezer HiFi samples into the review.
