Server is running really sluggish

I still think you're better off with a server OS on your server tho!

For the uses the OP, I don't see how a server OS would help or be necessary. Either way though, Win7 isn't the cause of the problem.

It stinks of disk issue to me, but also could be a video driver issue too, there are a lot of things it could be actually.

It's the right tool for the job mentality. I've ran and managed my fair share of Win 7/8/8.1 servers, none of them perform nearly as well as a proper server OS in my experience. Though they generally do the basics well..running a consumer OS on server hardware has never fared will in my experience. But maybe I've had bad luck. :)

because plex uses java and is bloated and slow

if we're going that route, than he needs to go to a linux server which will be the best tool for this job as memory management on windows especially consumer editions just isn't anywhere near efficient.

However considering what he's doing should work it doesn't seem like learning a new OS should be necessary.

Bloated and slow programs will not cause your mouse to stutter when simply moving it around the screen. This sounds like a memory issue.

This is a good point. Have you ran a memtest? You already pulled smart info from your drive. Im sure the people using the server can go without Magnum PI for a few hours while you test your hardware.

it will if java is eating a bunch of i/o and spitting pages like a possessed copier

it will if any process does that. the point is no processes seem to be doing that. and, that really does not address the underlying cause of the behavior. even light weight applications could perform poorly if the system memory is on the fritz.

Memory or video. I just cleaned a virus off a machine that was loading down the video card and causing similar issue.

Have we considered running a Malwarebytes scan?

I don't think it is Plex! I have a little 1150 dual core running a Plex server and never have issues like OP is indicating.

Hit Ctrl+Alt+Del and open up Task Manager to find out what all you have running in the background. If you have MS Office, printer software, etc... running these can be serious system hogs.

Sadly at the time it was the only media server that would work with all of my devices without a ton of tinkering and all that. I use Roku and Apple devices

yes that is what I thought at first but wanted to rule out the easy stuff until I get time this weekend to test it

MB Scan came back with a couple things, but no virus or anything serious. Deleted them and restarted so I will watch it and see what happens now

I will go through and see what all I can take out of there to see if that will speed it up some

ohhhhh got it you dont have physical access to this machine then?

nope not till this weekend ... work trip so I have been just remoting into so far

Wait... does the system seem sluggish because you are logging in remotely???

no it performs the same when I am there ... It was sluggish before I left and was sluggish while I remoted in.

you know it might be worth a shot to do remotely but you can run the windows memtest by just searching for it and selecting reboot. It wilkl auto boot the server and it dumps a log if it finds anything. IDK how the new version in windows 7 and up compare to memtest86 but i mean while your away why not?

ran the memtest from remote and it restarted with no errors or anything. It seems pretty basic but that is what it told me

plex drags with very large libraries with lots of metadata if you don't need transcoding use simple dlna or serviio if you need trans coding
and lose avast its realtime scaning is probly 1/2 the issue

Can't say I have yet to experience any major Plex issues or slowdowns on my VM that's running on a fraction of the resources his server has available...multiple streams over LAN and WAN...though maybe I don't have large enough libraries yet? Dunno...been a very smooth operation for me thus far and my VM's are stored on my RAID5...not sure how the OP is running Plex...but if on the OS hdd this could be worth migrating or setting up a VM for imho... my performance and results have been great, can't recommend Plex enough!

+1 on Avast though...been a long time since I deployed that because it does have a tendency to consume resources. But I'm an MSE/Defender + MBAM Free fan to keep things simple. I've deployed Webroot with pretty decent success as well...MBAM is always involved in any deployment hands down. Might be worth a shot to uninstall Avast and report back...

what do you consider a very large library? Right now, I would say I have 1 TB in movies and another 500mb in pics and home vids ... I consider this really small.

I will try losing avast, what do you recommend?

My setup is ...
HDD - OS Install
Raid5 - Plex and storage of server stuff

I will try the MSE/Defender + MBAM and see how that goes ...

I will do this tomorrow and let you know if I see some speed increase

switched over to MSE + MBAM yesterday and still seems to be doing good ... although I just restarted so it will be a few more days before I can really tell.

I did notice quite a bit of disk activity ... is that normal?

Over 60sec you topped at 1mb/s thats completely normal and imo even a bit low for a machine running plex and other things.
