Monitors are measured in a diagonal way, and only the watchable or view able (illuminated) area is used not the rim..For the calculation, a calculator is a must!
You can also calculate the length and breadth of the monitor or any screen using simple pythagoras theorem..

Let the common factor be X so length=16x and width=9x (assuming it's 16:9 not 4:3)
then (16x)^2 + (9x)^2 = (screen diagonal)^2
=>256x^2 + 81x^2 =(diagonal)^2
=> 337x^2= (diagonal)^2
=>x=diagonal/337^1/2

So common factor =diagonal/18.35
So, Length of a 16:9 monitor =16*diagonal/18.36 and width=9*diagonal/18.36

Also by calculations,
Length of a 4:3 monitor=4*Diagonal/5 and Width =3*Diagonal/5

and 1 inch=2.54 cm

for rough assumption here is the pic

edit. correct answer by using aspect ration is 18.35756

I think it's common knowledge/sense? I thought of that in 6th Grade.
At that time I drool so much at PC peripheral price list lol. I even draw my dream spec (I want an overclocked Celeron 300A xD) in paper and imagine the size of all that thing on my desk.

Stanley Powerlock has my vote :)
Thanks AthlonX2

OH, just wait a second obivously if you have bought it there is no point in calculating, I'm trying to give people a rough Idea of the minimum Length and / or Height of the the table or the shelf thingy, Also many complete noobs don't even know how is the monitor measured id the non viewable area is included or not, If you want an example here it is http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/help-how-to-read-understand-monitor-size.199558/
oh srly you cant calculate it that way, first u need to measure leght and width to get current result.
pythagoras.png

you can calculate screen size by using aspect ratio

It does work like that you can't really use aspect ratio (without pyth) to calculate screen size and the simplest way is pythagoras theorm for any other methods, like trigonometry, angle would be required, ca you even give the rough steps to calculate using aspect ratio without pythagoras? and okay I will change the value..I have personally used this many times in the past

AND I FIGURED THIS ONE OUT IN THE VII grade

^^ cant indeed, but thats what you just did
Oh man sorry, just read it again (complete post), what I meant was that you have to use the pyth otherwise aspect ratio is of no use, just do one conversion form diagonal to height how hard can it be just to check if it works ,calculation error is just 0.1,IT DOES WORK, HOW CAN YOU SAY IT DOESN'T?

can u just paste the formula that you use to

can u just paste the formula that you use to
THE FORMULA IS IN BOLD, COLOURED, UNDERLINE in the first post, Length=16 X Diagonal/18.36 and Width=9 X Diagonal/18.36, it does work, just see below the quoted message

This will be for my bro: Ty for trolling with my account -.-

HUH? what I don't really understand what you are saying? Was I a troll:confused:? I didn't really mean to...Seriosuly I don't understand..If I did something wrong I'm sorry

My own bro. He used my account, this wasnt bad what he did here but in other sites he did, he bought headset from auction house-.-
Sry for trouble what he made
