Here is a clip of my 5+ year old 2600K running at 4.8ghz with a 1080 Ti, playing Battlefield 4 at 4K resolution. Enjoy!

I've yet to see a 1440 rig that was cpu bound.

8gb of ram is just about enough for most usage.

So I'd say go for it.

It still sucks if it needs to be overclocked that much.

4th generation? By my standards they started pulling punches after Sandy Bridge, the second generation. And even Sandy Bridge fundamentally sucks, simply because of the way they axed overclocking support, unless you bought the top tier K processor. Other than that it was their last generation with any significant improvement in my eyes.
Blasphemy! Sandy Bridge is the best architecture ever!

OP: yeah go for Ryzen 1700 (and OC). PS. I voted yes on the 1080 Ti as well.

my brother has a 3570K @ 4.2GHz, which i think is slower than your CPU @ 4.5GHz. i have a Ryzen 1700x @ 4GHz. we both have 1080 Tis and we both game on 3440x1440 monitors. and we pretty much get the same performance. i have a slight advantage in GTA V, but nothing note worthy.

before this I had an Intel 5930K @ 4.6GHz, and honestly, i feel like i downgraded. if i were you, i would bump up the RAM to 16GB and get the 1080 Ti. upgrade the CPU further down the road. either wait until intel produces an affordable 8 core CPU or get the Zen 2 (whatever they will call it) after they work out the kinks and equip it with an acceptable amount of PCI E lanes.

Hmm doesn't really affect me since i bought the K version but yeah, i remembered the news limited overclocking capabilities.

Hey mate just to check with you, are you running on a normal monitor with 144hz? (normal in the sense there is no G-sync or freesync)

Yup. Would definitely upgrade my GPU to 1080Ti. Stocks are very limited here in my country + I'm waiting for Palit 1080Ti GameRock Edition to come out before throwing the money on them.

Op, I tried Mafia 3 at 720p, and to my amazement it gave me 100fps at my current settings, while at 1080p it barely manages to stay at 60fps.
So obviously the old 2600k still has some live in it.
In any case, you can test your cpu capability by reducing graphical settings, at low settings your fps should go up significantly.

So I advise the 1080ti also, you can still wait for another intel generation, and enjoy the extra eyecandy the 1080ti allows you.

I have three 60hz 2ms monitors, no G-sync or Free Sync. I actually use nVidia's Fast Sync. Any monitor can use it and as long as your frame rate is higher than your monitors refresh rate, you will get no vertical tearing with low latency.
G-sync and Free Sync only function under the monitors refresh rate.
I chose not to waste the money on faster refresh rate monitors because once nVidia Surround is enabled we are limited to 60hz.

I think you should make the jump and sell the 290 to recoup some of the cost. Your processor is plenty. Same arguments made about FX series and other AMD processors apply to Sandy Bridge. High resolution gaming, the processor core speed matters less.

I run a haswell chipset with a titan. I cant stream some AAA titles but for just gaming its fine. your 2600k should be fine too. imo :toast:

well sir u have your 2600k at 4.8 to 5ghz not all of us won chip lottery best i can do was 4.6 under water then back down to 4.2 on air. As i mentioned 5-10fps that isn't much that why i held on 2600k for soo long. After switching to 6800k i noticed i maintain higher min frame, just my personal experienced.

Just received a confirmation on my ram sticks coming this week. Can't wait for them to arrive.

Do we have any expert here? Are there really a huge difference between having FreeSync/Gsync VS standard 144hz refresh rate? I mean if a monitor that can perform 144hz, it's equivalent to having those Free/G sync stuff right?

These are forms of adaptive syncing that stop vertical tearing from occuring.
Having a 144hz monitor does not automatically mean you have G-sync/Free sync.

G-sync/Free sync works when your frame rate is below the monitors refresh rate.
nVidia now has "Fast sync". This option is in the nVidia Control Panel and does not require a special monitor.
It works when your frame rate is above the monitors refresh rate. It also has a low latency.

It's up to you to determine which you will need based on the monitor and gpu you buy.

These are forms of adaptive syncing that stop vertical tearing from occuring.

^this, if you have the top of the line GPU gsync is kinna waste cuz most of the time your at max fps.
Gsync is good for mid tier gpu or high refresh/pixel monitor like mine lol

Here is a clip of my 5+ year old 2600K running at 4.8ghz with a 1080 Ti, playing Battlefield 4 at 4K resolution. Enjoy!

You're 100% correct. Even without the hyperthreading my 2500K killed games all day no problem. I suppose it didnt hurt that it could hold a 4.6ghz oc with ease,& room to spare. Ill always miss that chip, they were certainly a classic to be honored as such :)

Exactly, this is where Fast sync comes in, for when your GPU can push passed the monitor refresh rate. It is probably the best nVidia innovation in a long time.

Sorry for being kinda retarded :slap: but is it safe to say i can just get a 144hz monitor without the care for those technology if i were to go for 1080Ti?

EDIT: just a few side questions i wanna ask you sweet folks based on your own experience. I am currently viewing 1440P at 27inch and it seems like the best spot in terms of PPI. So my question is

1. Does anyone have any experience with a 34inch on 2560X1080 resolution? Im currently looking into a local monitor brand https://prismplus.sg/x340/ which runs in two hz and resolution.
(3440X1440 @ 100Hz or 2560X1080 @ 144hz) P.S The monitor comes with Freesync

2. 144Hz vs 100hz. Any noticeable difference for people with such monitor? Like if i were to really stare hard with my naked eyes without software.

EDIT 2: The monitor is called Microboard in Amazon
