should i play gears of war 1 before 2?

I was in EBgames today and i do want to play gears of war 2. i was playin it at a friends last year and i liked the campaign and horde mode and such. Now the first game is $22 used, should i get that and play it first?

The campaign mode in the first one is only about 5-6 hours. It's a fun game but had I known it was so short I never would have bought it.

The thing is that GOW1 should have told a better story of the game then it actually did. Even if you played it you wouldn't get much of how it can/should relate to GOW2. You are really better off just googling it and going from there with GOW2.

Now this may or may not be fully accurate but here is what I know:

A group of humans decide to colonize some planet called Sera. They awaken the subterranean inhabitants called the Locust Horde and now face total extinction from that planet if they don't defeat them. The plot so far was that in GOW1 you were lead to believe you were attacking their main stronghold. But soon realize that because Sera is their homeworld there are many "main" strongholds.
GOW1 starts as the main character is released from prison and is asked to help defeat the Locust Horde.
