Here's the situation:
I have a spare 880W PSU and a spare DFI X58 motherboard (I nabbed the eVGA X58 I have now for cheap here on the forums and I picked up the Corsair TX750 on an insane sale). I can get an i7 980X (Or a 990X, when it launches )for 495$ and I can part out my Q9650 box (Mobo, CPU and RAM) to fund myself the new CPU and I'll cover the cost of some RAM.
The dilemma is: I buy CPUs from work and the terms of the sale (and the reason for the massive discount) include me being unable to resell them for three years from the date of purchase (unless I quit my job or get fired, that is). My 975 was bought around June 2009, so that one has more than a year and a half to go on it - This will probably be towards the Sandy Bridge die shrink time, if the road map is to be believed.
Essentially, I'll be trading my resell freedom and my Q9650 box for an el-cheapo upgrade to a hyperthreaded six-core. The Q9650 is the fastest non-extreme edition LGA775 chip, so I bet its value will not degrade anytime soon.
The question is: Is it worth it?
Edit:
Also - How much do you think a Q9650 will fetch on fleabay? I've seen them at around 230$ with 3 days to go on the auction. Interested in the case it doesn't go here locally.
