I'm going by motherboards here, because I carried over parts from my last build to my current built for a while.

ASUS M4N98TD EVO (nForce 980a SLI)
AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition
4GB 1333MHz DDR3 RAM
nVIDIA GeForce GTX 580 1.5GB

I put this system together in late 2010, carrying over the RAM from my previous build. I replaced the motherboard, CPU, and RAM with what I have in my current build back in mid-2013. My current build has lasted the longest, though I did upgrade the GPU.

2013: i5-3570k in a UD5H... 2015: won an MSI Z97 board here on TPU, slapped a 4790k in it, and now it's my primary rig after parting out the 3570k setup this past fall, so about 4 years.

I don't plan on upgrading the 4790k rig till there's a compelling reason... and DDR4 RAM prices simmer down.

Also, I added two x58 / X5670 crunching rigs to my lineup last year.

Spend time finding a great PSU and Case, and you'll be paid back with years of use without problems.
Agreed, I actually am still using the SAME PSU 9+ years and still going strong in fact it powers my new rig! TX850 is a MONSTER PSU!

get a new rig ~ every 4 years or so. Though case, psu, and some other things usually stick through several rigs. But the CPU/Mobo/Mem/GPU get changed around that. Used to do more than that but now I seem to be able to tolerate performance loss better than I used to.

Of course this may stretch to 5 years and beyond this time. With prices where they are I can't afford a full rig re-work for the usual 1000$. Which means I may go 5 years or more this time.

Benchmark Scores it sucks even more less now ;)
Parts of my PC are old as fuck like the CHVF and FX8320 and Thermolab Baram HSF other bits are newer like the 2 Kingston SSD's and the DRR3-2400 and RX580
I was going to replace it all last year with a Ryzen 1700X and DDR4 last year but prices were ridiculous here for just a Mobo CPU and ram
