software to convert .vob to .mpg?

im looking for some free software to convert a .vob file i have to .mpg

also, is there free software out there that would let me compress the video as well as convert it?

Vob is practically mpg, the only difference is subtitle tag data. Rename it to mpg and it'll work as an mpg (and should be detected as such by your file manager).

i tried that before and it didnt work. i just copy/pasted the .vob to my HDD and renamed it to .mpg. windows media player wont play it of course. i use vlc which works but i need it to work in wmp

Vob is mpeg yes, not mpeg 1 though, also if the goal is for wmp to play it why not use divx/xvid/etc?
