Hi !

I've had a connection problem appear recently :
After using my computer for a few hours, I stop being able to connect to anything but google and youtube on Chrome (I tried facebook but it didn't load either, same thing for googleproducts forums). This includes any kind of program that uses a connection on my computer, like Discord.
This has happened every day for a week or two.

When it happens, I'm forced to reboot and everything will go back to normal, until it starts fucking up again in a few hours.

Here's some information :
- I'm connected through an ethernet cable and have always been with no complications
- We have another computer on wifi here and no connection problems of note
- Ran a malware and a virus check, nothing was found
- I read that using Google's DNS could cause this, so I set it back to default, but it did not work (I also ran an "ipconfig /flushdns" just in case)
- I tried replugging the cable, rebooting the router, it didn't work
- I checked with Edge (the only browser that I have other than Chrome), and while Chrome loads google and youtube, Edge doesn't load anything
- I also tried disabling my firewall and antivirus after the bug happened, it didn't do anything
- I cannot correlate the problem's appearance with any recent change in my computer, only that it started happening a lot after gaming sessions on Fallout 4 (which is a single player game so it really makes no sense)
- I have hamachi and virtualbox installed, which have both added a connexion - I do not use them often, so they're usually off, and I've tried disabling them but it did not work http://i.imgur.com/SL6sE8I.png
- Here's a screenshot of my ipconfig /all, note that nothing changes whether the bug is happening or not http://i.imgur.com/cLKLcfy.png
- I can't say for sure when the problem started, but I remember the first occurrence happening when I was playing Paladins with a friend a month ago - Discord suddenly disconnected (yet Paladins didn't), my friend advised that it could be hamachi since he had a similar problem once, so I set up hamachi to stay off by default and rebooted

Just to be clear : this problem happened overnight, no change that I can remember. The first occurrence kind of happened randomly, and it was infrequent enough so that I did not take it for a serious problem (and I don't even remember it happening more than once), but it's been happening frequently for a dozen days, since I started playing Fallout 4 (I know it makes no sense but it's my only landmark).
I'd be grateful if anybody could help me getting rid of this annoying bug.

Thanks for taking the time to read, have a good day :)

Who's your internet provider? Cable or DSL?

What Country do you live in?

Sometimes Modem/Routers, cords, NICs have failures, even if the whole unit isn't affected, try switching ethernet ports or go on wifi.

My internet provider is free (the modem/router's called a "Freebox Revolution"). I live in France. It's DSL.

I'm switching ethernet ports right now, will advise.

He might have bridge taps all over the place due to not having a dedicated pair coming from the nid/demarcation

I'm on W10, I've upgraded around a year ago, done several formats since and my last one must've been 2 or 3 months ago.

Since I've switched ports like eidairaman suggested, I haven't had the issue even once. I think it's too early to tell, but it's looking good thus far !
I'll see how it goes and post again later.

And thank you both for taking the time to help me, it's much appreciated :)

Thanks for coming back, are you in a house or apartment, how old is the place?

I'm in an apartment, and it's only 12 years old. Is there any reason to believe something might be wrong with it ? Or is it more probable that my router's malfunctioning ?

if switching the router ethernet port resolved your issue I'd say you just had a failing port on the router itself

It just happened again today so switching ports didn't work.

I'll follow Viper's suggestions with the drivers and troubleshooting options.

There's a good chance it will have nothing to do with this but it cant hurt to ask, is your windows clock set to the right date and time? I know you can get certificate/errors etc if it's not, atleast it used to happen.

Might be your modem or connection itself, unless the ethernet port is bad on the computer, have you tried swapping cables?

I've seen funny issues because of the modem or even a card your port is on in the DSLAM/SAI or at the central office/exchange. Even bridge taps cause it. I wonder if the company you went through even dedicated your jack to a single pair going out to the dslam

Considering telephony standards are different in the us vs EU, does your modem hook into a RJ11 jack?

My router updates its firmware automatically. As for the drivers, Viper's link gave me an error "You need to install Killer hardware" or something. I found a realtek lan driver for my mobo, I don't know if it's relevant, but I'm gonna give it a try.

As for the clock, it's set up correctly. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

I'll try windows troubleshooting the next time it happens.

it would sound your line is unstable.

call your isp and perhaps ask them to explain your dropouts.

only reason anything loads is because it'll be stored in your cache so will appear like they are working

Yes I thought about this, but then I tried to load youtube vids that I'd never watched before and they did. If you weren't talking about a cache on my computer but rather related to my isp/country, I think it'd load a few more things than youtube and google. But yes, it might possibly be my isp. I'm contacting them as last resort since I know from experience that their customer support lacks in quality ><

The connection drops definitely got rarer since my first post, so I'm still waiting for the next one to try troubleshooting. Let's hope it never comes :P

If your modem/router has a line quality menu screen, you may want to look at that and post a screen shot of it.

Hi again.

So, the problem occurred again just now. While my connection was out, I tried the windows troubleshooting (which didn't find any problems, even when specifying a website that I can't connect to). I also tried the Ping IP and Ping DNS options with NetAdapterRepair (which was suggested by Viper). It couldn't ping the IP (it can't anyway even when I have a connection), but it could ping the adresses : http://i.imgur.com/jEwhJNB.png
It seems nothing changes when the problem's happening. Windows doesn't find any problem and I can still ping stuff as I could before.

I then tried a few options with that program which seemed to have reset some network & firewall settings. I doubt it did anything, but only time will tell.

I have to say I'm rather confused because the problem occurs very rarely now (it didn't occur at all yesterday and only once the day before that), while it happened several times a day before I resorted to making this thread. It seems either a few things I've done have made it happen less, or it's just a coincidence.

As for my modem/router's interface, it has a really fancy one with a lot of options but while browsing through it, I didn't find any "line quality" option. The closest I found was a bandwidth history graphic, which shows nothing special http://i.imgur.com/XCYkK7M.png

Oh, and in answer to eidairaman, whose post I completely overlooked (sorry) :
I haven't tried swapping ethernet cables. My current one is slightly damaged (the outermost tube has a cut) - it's been for years with no noticeable problem. I don't have another ethernet cable long enough on hand, but I'll see if I can find one and replace mine.
As for whether my modem/router hooks into a RJ11 jack ... I think not, though I lack the knowledge required to answer precisely. It's directly connected to a power socket through a box which takes power in, and has an ethernet cable and a power cable going out into the modem/router. This might be clearer :
Power plug --------------------> Box | Power cable + ethernet cable --------------------> Power port + ethernet port | Modem/Router
So, no telephone line socket or anything like this. I may have missed something, I don't even remember how it was installed :c

PS : Sorry for the french in the screenshots by the way :<

take snapshots of all of your equipment and where its plugged in.

Hey. I'm back with some new info.

First of all, for what my equipment looks like, I don't have a camera at home (my phone can only call ... I know, it's crazy), but >>here<< is an image taken from the web (it's exactly the same thing, only the power plug's connected to a multiplug). >>Here<< is another one more detailed. It's a really simple setup isn't it ? Nothing more than that and my ethernet cable.

Second, it must've been a placebo effect or one of the kind, because right now the disconnections are happening as often as they did before. I had more than one happen while I was playing Overwatch, and I didn't get disconnected from the game, though I was disconnected from battle.net (checked through the bnet launcher). It happened the first time with Paladins as well. It's just weird that I would not get disconnected from google, youtube, and whatever online game I'm currently playing. I don't know what this means.

But the most important of all is that every time I get disconnected and decide to reboot (or even just shutdown), it takes 3 more minutes than usual (the usual being less than 20 seconds). I'm not ruling out that it's coming from something outside my computer, but it sure as hell looks like it's not.

I plan on formatting my disk soon if I don't find a solution. I'd still like to fix this without, though. Is the above information indicative of anything ? Any tests for me to run which could help pinpoint the source of the problem ?

Thanks for your help.

Get your isp involved, replace the modem, your service is using poe.

I ended up formatting and for 3 days my connection has been perfectly stable. Problem solved.
