ok, i am having a problem where i can view any video on my media players but theres is no video to go along with it. i can only hear the sound but no video. i use VLC, WMP9, realplayer, and quicktime. the only media player which will work properly is quicktime. all media players will not work right. ive never had this problem b4, and i already have a bunch of vid and audio codecs, installed. ive tried reinstalling the media players with no luck and also reinstalling my codecs, but still no luck. please help!replies appreciated!

check what video codec the files use, and go download that vid codec :)

VLC has built-in codecs and won't use installed codecs. If you're not sure what codec a certian movie uses, try checking out a program called GSpot. It's awesome. It'll tell you what codecs you need.

ok i dont think it has to do with my codecs, because this has never happened b4. i already have all the codecs i need installed 2, but the video still wont play.ive also tried switching video drivers for my gpu.

Can you tell us what you're doing? Step by step? What program are you using? Like I say, if you're using VLC, any codecs you install won't help you at all since VLC doesn't actually look outside of its own libraries.

Just list the steps that you're taking.

google divx and google xvid :(

Divx AND Xvid?!
I'm sorry, but doesn't Xvid decode Divx? (I'm not sure if it's vice versa or not)

And Divx has spyware. They used to be cool, but now they just want money.

As far as I'm concerned, assuming that VLC doesn't already decode Divx (*cough* it does), it wouldn't help if that's what he's using. I still highly suggest using GSpot to actually FIND the codec he needs rather than just guessing like everyone else.
Here is the link to the official GSpot homepage: http://www.headbands.com/gspot/download.html

Another thing that would help greatly is what extension the filename has.

And if you really want Divx, check out not only Divx and Xvid but also 3vix.

ok, for my default universal player i use realplayer, or i use vlc, or WMP. now when open a movie, any type of format, i can hear sound but no picture shows up on my screen. i am not only using vlc. this HAS NOT HAPPENED B4. this all started yesterday, and b4 that i could watch any movie i want. is it possible it could be a parasite?(just throwing that out there)
BTW,- this is not a codec problem! ive had many codecs installed prior to this occurance. i already have like every codec u can imagine!
edit- ok ive just just playing a couple fiels and mpeg4 files are the only files that will play with realplayer with video and sound, avi, asf, rm, ect still will not play

ok nvm it was codec related, and i just started to unistall my codecs and it finally works after uninstalling some little codecs

Hmm.. It could of been the type of renderer you were using. All of those programs should be hardware accelerated, but you need a type of hardware acceleration. One of the codecs might of tried to override the default renderer to something that you don't support. That could explain not having video.

sorry disagree, divx DOESNT have spyware, if you download the latest version of divx, you will infact see that during installation there is the option to install the "divx search bar" (which if i can remember rightly its basically the google toolbar) this is optional although if you dont notice the option when you install it will install automatically and the checkbox needs to be checked, imo divx is one of (if not) the best codecs out there.

Oh, true. Divx is a great codec. It's getting a little bulky, but HD-Divx is amazing. Menus too? Wow.

Now, I'm not sure what other folk have said without reading all the posts, but;

ket said:

That seems to be somewhat specific and far from guessing. I'd suspect other folk have also said similar. So, in the future, don't be arrogant and obnoxious enough to take an indirect stab at all the members of TPU assuming we are morons and you know more, mkay?
