SSD disabling itself on its own? (4 days in a row now)

So for whatever reason which i have not been able to find a solution for yet.
One of my SSDs at random times throughout the day just decides to disable itself

it completely disappears from everywhere, all the files are obviously not accessible, it disappears from device manager, doesn’t show up in CMD.

it is still plugged in, right after I restart the PC however it’s back to normal. Shows up everywhere all files are fine.

I have done a SMART test with multiple different programs and even simple ones with CMD and in windows.
I’m lost

anyone have any ideas?

thanks

also just incase anyone is wondering all the smart test came back saying it’s fine and theres nothing wrong with it

Some more information on the model of SSD and system specs than just "my SSD" would help......

If this is an NVMe and you're running Ryzen, I had similar experiences on my SN750 when I was still using my 3700X. The other drives were fine, no SMART errors, just sometimes disappeared entirely. Every time the drive disappeared, the next reboot was guaranteed to be stuck on POST until I cleared CMOS. Turned out to be the Infinity Fabric crapping out, had to tweak my CLDOs, my 3700X was a horrible quality chip all around.

I have a 3700x and it’s also an NVMe

so this is probably it

what did you do exactly to fix it? @tabascosauz
Just tweaked CLDOs and that’s it? Also if you don’t mind how’d you do that?

thanks

I'm not sure what RAM speed you're running, but I wasn't pushing my Infinity Fabric too hard, just 3600 / 1800MHz IF. I vaguely recall running 1.1V VSOC / 0.9V VDDP / 1.04V VDDG_IOD / 0.95V VDDG_CCD, and that being the only thing that ever solved the NVMe problem after a year and a half of living with the 3700X.

On Matisse CPUs the separate VDDGs aren't visible to software in Windows, so you'll have to go off the BIOS settings.

I think Asus BIOSes pretty much default to those settings nowadays though . On my 5900X now (with the same board, RAM and drives) I run 1.038V VSOC / 0.9V VDDP / 0.95V VDDG_IOD / 0.95V VDDG_CCD. Generally all 4 of them (although 0.9V VDDP always worked for me) you can run them as low as possible, ideally.

My circa June 2019 3700X was real bad though, I had to pull out all the stops to get it to work properly, both the cores and IF domains. Core C-states disabled, DF C-states disabled, Typical current idle, SOC/Uncore OC mode, etc.

Check your event viewer for stornvme entries though, wanna make sure I am barking up the right tree. Also, try another M.2 slot if you have one, I couldn't because it's not my only drive.

Again......specs please......help us help you, this is like squeezing toothpaste
  • CPU: it's a 3700X, but are you running completely stock? Global Cstates?
  • RAM: install Zentimings, post up a screenshot ZenTimings (protonrom.com)
  • Board: all I can tell is that it's a Gigabyte board (use Ryzen Master and post a screenshot of what it shows under Voltage Controls section to see what CLDO_VDDP, VDDG_IOD and VDDG_CCD the board defaults to)
  • Drives

If you can, you should open your motherboard's website and update BIOS. Who knows, maybe there are some software gremlins.

just decides to disable itself
this usually means that its controller has crashed and requires a restart

you have changed the cables and port to rule out a connectivity issue?

@tabascosauz Hi. I also have a SN750 using it temporarily as game drive that sometimes also disconnects after use (happens rarely 4 times in 5 ish months - but discourages me to make it the new OS and boot drive as I initially intended. But i have a 2700x (used on Auto) with 3000Mhz Ram. WD support had no solution.

i did, however i won’t find out till later in the day if it decides to do it again.

something else I’m thinking about trying out is opening a program that’s stored on that SSD and just have it open all day to see if that does anything.

i barely ever use any files on it

Alright, after some more testing, yesterday i was at my pc all day and it didn’t disable itself

today, i left my pc and i have my pc set to sleep after 30 minutes

once i wake the pc up the disk is disabled

So it got me thinking, i restarted the pc and as always the disk is back to normal, i set my sleep timer to 5 minutes and again, after waking up the pc it was disabled

i have disabled the sleep timer on my pc and it has been working normal for the entire day.

for whatever reason the pc going into sleep is causing this I’m 99% sure unless it’s just coincidence

Windows can sometimes turn off drives for power saving. Go to your power management from Control Panel and check that from advanced options.
