The IDE channel it's attached to has to be skipped entirely to progress through POSTing. The drive is a 120GB with an XP install on it atm. Is there something I need to do with the system or the drive before it will be detected? What I've seen on youtube suggests it will just work without adjustment

Set the drive to Pri ATA Master (ATA0 Drive 0), don't use CS (Cable Select).

An SSD has no CHS so the controller might not know what to do with it, unless the converter reports something though this is rare and most "el cheapo" converters don't have this ability.

The jumper on the adapter is already set to master

Further update: The adapter is confirmed working, as it successfully allowed the SSD to be detected on IDE in a LGA 775 Dell

This is now resolved. The board could not handle drives larger than 32GB but that has been very kindly patched by Chkcpu on Vogons. Attached is the patched BIOS, for 1Mbit Biostar M5ALC boards.
