I can see FSR is struggling a little with the fine white lines on the building windows in the far back. DLSS seems to be applying some sort of contrast enhancement to edges leaving dark halos around lines, which I don't like. Still, I think they're both doing a great job compared to the native TAA solution which seems to lose a bunch of detail in vegetation. I'm glad both these upscalers exist and we can use them at native res for AA now.

It's close enough especially at 4k in most parts of the game the only area that FSR is noticeably worse is neon all other areas the image quality is more than adequate.

While there is no concrete evidence, recent releases suggest that AMD-sponsored titles only support FSR and not DLSS/XeSS, for whatever reason. The good thing is that talented modders have brought DLSS to Starfield, which we've tested today.

Thinking like a game producer that gives zero fucks about the hardware end-users have (Todd has already told people they should just upgrade their PCs instead of complaining about optimization) it's only natural BGS gives an equal or lower number of fucks about DLSS/XeSS.

Hardware nerds like us are literally the only people that care.

Great breakdown, thanks Maxus!
The Shimmering has the be the biggest improvement for DLSS, that would surely annoy me when I finally play the game, hope it gets added officially

Definitely DLSS 3.5 is suppior to FSR3!

Best part is DLSS 3.5 works with all RTX cards!

I don't think Games should be exclusive to hardware and they should be building games for all hardware technologies and let the consumer decide what he wants to use it's my opinion.

Cheers

The article says so: they look the same, only DLSS doesn't shimmer (tends to cause crashes, tho).

230 Watts at 99% when this GPU in meant to pull 320 W. 30% performance remains untapped lol. Nvidia needs to release new drivers for this game fixing whatever the devs have broken.
But otherwise DLAA generated frames and native res forever.

Yikes. The TAA is absolutely god awful.

For those that do not want to support PureDark's paywalling of the FrameGeneration side... No need to adorn an eye-patch, as another modder named "LukeFZ" has a take on FSR 2 DLSS on Nexus mods as well. And theirs is completely free and includes Frame Generation. I won't link, but you can search Nexus Mods by user for "LukeFZ" and find it. The mod is called "Starfield Frame Generation - Replacing FSR2 with DLSS-G"

Something seems odd

Both FSR and DLSS look kind of bad in this game. Even easy things like jaggedness of normal polygonal edges are not good.

Almost like there's something in the engine or rendering path that doesn't allow either to do their jobs properly.

Might as well not bother at 1080p and 1440p. The Native FSR looks pretty much identical to DLAA (other than nvidia doing a better job with thin horizontal lines) and the performance difference is negligible no matter what settings you are using. The game's performance is just broken.

I'm not sure what the article means about XeSS not working correctly. I've been using it myself via the mod and it not only works, but looks better than the game's native FSR implementation. It's much more stable handling fine detail at a distance. The only noticeable artifact I've found is that you occasionally get moire patterns appearing on clothing, which seems to be a regular issue with XeSS. However, I've only noticed that in dialogue sequences and the general uplift in image quality more than offsets it.

/edit/ Probably also worth mentioning that I'm using a 1080 Ti. Maybe XeSS is only broken on Arc.

I found it strange to test FSR and this DLSS mod but not the performance of the game itself. :')

Man DLSS is way better than FSR even when it's just modded in instead of Natively implemented

The only place it really bothered me was Neon. Although really no point in using FSR if you don't have to. Shame native TAA is so bad meaning for AMD and pre RTX cards it's their only option.
