Yes, there is actually a difference between the Desktop and Notebook variants: the Desktop variant doesn't have support for brightness control.
That is literally the only side-effect of using a Desktop driver on a notebook, but still.

Problem is I'm not sure how to detect. Any suggestions?

There are some characteristics that differentiate mobile GPUs from desktop ones.

GPU-Z used to direct me to the page for the mobile 1050 Ti when used on my laptop instead of the desktop one.

Desktop 1050 Ti: 1291MHz bCLK, variant GP107-400-A1

Mobile 1050 Ti: 1493MHz bCLK, variant N17P-G1-A1

GPU-Z validation for my laptop's dGPU: 4c2w2

NVCleanstall doesn't have the knowledge GPU-Z does. I'm a notebook noob, is there any guidance from NVIDIA which driver to pick if you don't know whether you have a notebook or desktop?

Perhaps a much more powerful feature would be an active, community driven ranking of best /top picks for drivers per range of notebooks? After all, there are those who dont like any driver update at all, others swallow everything, and still others have soecific issues with some versions... So even if you find notebook drivers... the question is hiw much time the OPs suggested function would ever help you. Its usually a trial and error situation anyway.

This has been added in today's version 1.7.0, thanks for making the suggestions and getting me to think about this :)
