hi all!

first time here so ill try to be brief, im in the position to build a new rig( maybe xcept for the case and ps) but not all at once, would it smarter to upgrade the mobo, cpu, ram first or go for the video and monitor?im coming from a dual core 939 mobo now(amd 4400+)

current: cpu amd 4400+ 939
mobo asus a8n-sli
G.C. XFX 7900gs 525m
psu xfinity 600w duel rail/flexforce 18a/20a
monitor kds 17" crt ( happy to see this go :))
any suggestions or input is certainly welcome!!! thanks in advance

I would start by getting a core 2 duo and a decent motherboard and ram.

yea thats what i was thinking to but... i wanted to drop a decent chunk on a 8800gt and a good lcd, guess im worried that the GT's will go up again.. as it stands now for what id pay for these 2 items i could get the mobo, ram, and a Q66 and still have some beer money left over:D... just dont know which is the smart step first lol

I would say save your cash and when you have enough money do a full upgrade.
I see swapping parts as kind of wasting money since your CPU will bottleneck the hell out of a good GPU.
Also, there are a lot of new things right around the corner so you may want to hold off for a lil while.

1. how much are you willing to spend now?
2. intel or AMD?
3. is gaming your main concern?

Rumor has it that the new 45nm chips are due out on Feb 18.

first off thxs for the welcome tzitzibp.... much appreciated my new build will prob be pulling double duty as it will prob have 3 users. the wife and i serfdaweb and do some gaming( AA and fear mostly)the daughter however(14 going on 22) has gotten heavy into photo editing and movie/vid making(almost assured a bright future as i see a scholarship somewhere and me having a comfy retirement not having to pay for it:D) iv always been an amd fan but lets face it,there way behind intel in the top notch chips race... and at present im looking at about an $800-1k budget but if i can go cheaper with like perf im all for it! hope this answers your questions sir:D

well, the heavy duty requirement is gaming... and vid making. but I believe you will be ok with the 7900gs for now!

(almost assured a bright future as i see a scholarship somewhere and me having a comfy retirement not having to pay for it:D)

you wish!!!

here is what I suggest:

1. GIGABYTE P35-DS3
2. INTEL CORE 2 DUO E8200 2.66 GHZ LGA775 - 1333 FSB
3.SUPERTALENT T800UX4GC5 4GB (2X2GB) DDR2 PC2-6400 800MHZ DUAL CHANNEL KIT

this is a total of about 450-500 usd
Get a good monitor (wish I could help, but i'm no good when it comes to monitors).
And you are done...

when 8800 gt become cheaper (3-4 months, i hope) get one, and the rig will be flying!

ofcourse this is only a suggestion based on what i can find in greece, so you might want to ask around your local stores for more specifics.... :toast:

No problem. Thats why I'm here. :D

Ya got a nice price on that monitor. Since that is a done deal, take that out of the list I made. My monitor didnt come with a DVI cable either. I just bought a DVI cable and hooked it up and it works great.

EVGA and gigabyte make good products. My first 3 builds were Gigabyte boards. Very sturdy and reliable. I used an EVGA motherboard and it served me well. It still works and is going to my brother for his next build. They just had issues with overclocking quad cores. But you wont have to worry about that here. My brother has an EVGA 7600GT and it works great for him.

well ,it happened, wifey has made it know to me she wants the little one to have her own box now-- so she has effectivly slammed the breaks on the whole dam project till she makes up my mind.....like the military... hurry up and wait:banghead:

Aw, that sucks. Hopefully it wont be long.
