Well I have to admit I was hesitant on this one. Never heard of it and it just seemed to arrive on steam. Looking at reviews; the positive far outweigh the negatives but with only 50 reviews I had a feeling I shouldn't waste my time.
The simple graphics kept drawing me back and after a few days of thinking it over I finally talked myself into purchasing it with the understanding that I would play an hour or so and then refund it. I just needed to get this title out of my system and Steams refund policy is the perfect tool to get that done.
So I loaded the game up and quickly setup my settings and key bindings. Jumped into the server search tab and.....all official servers were empty. EMPTY! Whoa that can't be good. I saw a total of 6 players online and all playing solo or with one other player on what seems to be private servers. If I had doubts about this game before well I sure as hell had serious doubts now!
I figured I may as well just start my own LAN server and check it out. I mean I knew I was returning this now. How could I get behind an online title with no online players?
Then I loaded into my first game. Visually the game is quite stunning. Sure its a low poly game but their artistic style is well done and the game looks beautiful for what it is. I was pleased to see the game running fantastic at 4k and maxed out visuals. So far so good! Audio is very well done too. The ambient noises are great and the music is very relaxing, well during the day anyway. If you are out in the world at night the music gets a little more tense. Not to mention at night there are these demons or some such creatures that roam the land....yeah I'll avoid them for now.
I dove in a little more and started poking around the town I spawned in. The place is called Old Town but it is more a village than anything. Plenty of people to chat with and plenty of things to nick as well, which leads me to my first issue: You can steal a lot of stuff and you can do it right in front of the NPC owner. Yeah I am sure that will change eventually so while I can get away with it I am going to steal everything that is not nailed down. Everything respawns fairly quickly so I can steal from a town, then sell everything to the same town...then eventually steal everything again...on and on. Lame but I figure they will implement something eventually; some sort of theft system.
So once a found a couple of NPC's to provide a quest or two I ventured outside the walls of this small town. I didn't last long. Ran out of water first and by the time I figured out how to get more water I was dead. Finding my dead body to get all my loot back proved impossible at first and then I learned (through a tutorial note during a loading screen) that by pressing 'Q' your body location appears on the screen. Looked to me to be a 350m walk. That walk ended with me finally locating my body, looting my corpse and then feeling all proud of myself I decided to venture into a cave I discovered. I soon decided that a giant spider should not be taunted. 20 minutes later I was back at the cave trying to get to my body. I had to leave and train to be an archer so I could use a bow to try and kill the spider. That worked but cost me all of my coin in training and the cost of a bow. In the end I showed that spider who is in charge and was rewarded with a cave full of ore and a bit of treasure.
Since my time in the cave I have explored quite a lot. The game world is quite large with plenty to see and discover. Loot is everywhere and the feeling of accomplishment when defeating a creature/monster/beastie is quite good. This game reminds me of playing D&D adventures and other old school games. It is not a in-depth RPG with a ton of attributes and skills but it does have a skill tree and there are skills to learn by training through NPC's. Leveling is slow and it feels rewarding so far. Combat is very basic and though I have not trained as a warrior yet and so cannot use a sword; I have used other tools at my disposal, Axes, knives etc.. There is so much I can't do yet but it makes the game fun and challenging as I try and discover trainers to help me learn.
There is a ton to do and see in this game so far and I feel it will only get better with time. I haven't even tackled the building aspect of this game yet, and I hear that it is quite good. Tonight I plan to build my first house and look forward to expanding my home into a thriving town. I haven't touched the magic system yet either but do look forward to it. I do love the survival aspect so far and the gameplay is fun. This is my kind of game and it is totally worth the $19.99 entry fee.
It's not perfect but it's fun and that my friends is why I play games.
About This Game
Weary of the life as a lumberjack, you decide to leave the safe walls of your homeland in order to travel far away and begin the life of an adventurer. Months later, just as you start to doubt your decision, you arrive on an archipelago where you hear about something called “The Warhorn”: A relic capable of granting immortality!
You decide to settle on one of the islands – where your story shall begin.
The Warhorn is a take on the unique mixture of genres, the most important ones being RPG and city-building/management while other distinctive elements in the game come from the exploration, puzzle and open world genres.
- Explore a vast open world: Including 5 themed biomes like spring / summer, autumn, winter, desert and jungle having their own unique sub-biomes with their own unique resources and denizens.
- Solve challenging puzzles: While most of them can be done alone, some might need a helping hand – or two.
- Face various foes: Every biome comes with its own set of animals, beasts and other denizens. Some of them may be neutral, but others could be deadly.
- Learn new skills: Wield a sword, swing a hammer or laugh at brute force and master the elements like fire, ice and light. Villagers can teach you many things, but in order for them to share their knowledge, you might have to earn their trust first… or a sizeable amount of riches.
- Build your empire: Learn how to build with different materials and create a village to your liking. Villagers will gather resources for you while your villages’ soldiers are protecting your empire.
- Be ready for war: Build powerful war machines to either defend your village or attack another in a fight for resources, relics and secrets of this world.
- Multiplayer: Everything in the game can be done together. Build the most incredible empire with your friends, trade with other empires or fight against them.
