Actually, the strategy you described is the one I have been having in my mind from the beginning. I only was not sure about the interpretation of your previous post. And maybe some snow blocks in the mix would be a nice idea, if that makes the process any faster (for example to have an inner core that also gives some cover) And indeed does glowstone melt ice, everything of light level 12 or higher does AFAIK, except sunlight. Hence my idea to use glass floors in its proximity. There are plenty of deserts in our MC world, so that's no problem. Glass should suffice. And further away from the build location, we could place torches as an extra layer of defence. But don't worry guys, there will be no start on the project as long as the place isn't made a bit more "civilised".
