Yes! only a little bit though. I thought it was awesome playing online with a console. Dreamcast was waaay ahead of the times.
Sega Channel for Genesis/CD. Modem for Saturn.

I never got the ethernet adapter for DC, only had the 56K modem

They have 9 locations in the US along with UK, Italy, Australia, and several other locations.
Well I'm in Australia, but I doubt I'm going to win that vote. ;)

Yeah, we have to figure out what the best location is for everyone that wishes to jump in. I know that Gameservers.com has some great pings even when not in the same region as the server.

We can also switch locations as the need arises without extra cost and is almost immediate.

Heck, we can do a 20 player private server for $15.95USD per month.
Dang, that's cheap as hell.
I think making it private would limit the playerbase. I know we are paying for it. I'm happy to contribute. If someone has the know-how you can set it up as public, but when the server is full it will boot none-members. I use to play on Q3 and CS 1.3 servers like this. Clan members get priority. This means it could always have random players and those who are in the "clan" never have to worry about waiting to get in.

Now if more than 20 people want to contribute, well either a bigger server is needed or two servers. One in EU and one in US.

Edit: I would pay for a server If I knew enough people would be actively playing. I just hosted a 8-player Quake 3 Instagib server years ago myself. Was always full and lots of fun. Easy to do. Not sure how to host UT99 though. You can also add mods like bots that leave as the server fills with people. character skins and player rankings.

I'd be down for UT99. You can get it running with DirectX 10. See this site: https://www.kentie.net/article/d3d10drv/

There is a v451 community patch out there too which fixes a few things, network bugs included.
Ooh that's really cool, I was only aware of nGlide being a thing for Ut99, thanks!

Since these are some nostalgic/vintage games, the servers are cheap as heck. LOL

We can get either game for $0.79 per slot for private servers on either game server. I would imagine that we would want to go with a private server.

I guess the next thing would be to figure out where to have it located?

I see currently that UT99 is leading with 17 votes and UT2004 has 15 votes.

This is looking very promising going forward. :peace: :peace: :peace:

This server would be up 24/7 as well.
I'm not that great at setting up game servers, so I would want to give someone with more knowledge admin rights to the server to control the games and what not....
Now that is convenient! Never knew this is being offered in such a way, saves the headache of setting up a VPS etc. And those prices are reasonable as well. I'll do a quick test with one of those servers just for fun when I'm back home. I wonder how much latency there'd be for Euro players fragging on a US server, I really hope it won't go above 50-80.

Aaah Quake was really nice too, so damn fast and the crazy things players would pull off :D I do like the idea of it being private and shared only via a Discord server for example, but I'm afraid that would alienate several people from TPU. Public is fun, there might be more people but I do doubt it based on the activity of the servers gameservers.com has.

Wouldn't it be better to simply organize a game night for different regions? Sure beats paying a monthly fee.

I need this - UT99 or 2004 I dont even care which !!! Flak cannon has smiley on projectile anyway

Happy to chip in for a server!

Also shit I feel old now. But in this case thats a good thing.

Locations is a thing. I would vote UK if this is bearable for US players. But I doubt that, my experience with NA servers is upwards of 80 ping. Not bad, but certainly not good. I thrive on 16-30ms :D

And then there is time zone, too

Well I'm in Australia, but I doubt I'm going to win that vote. ;)

Honestly we should build a global server inside the earth's core to keep things fair

I just purchased 2004 on Steam, booted it up, changed the graphics settings and then there was the announcer with "Hooolly shit *echo*" on all maxed out

I've set up a primitive Discord server and will be doing some testing. If anybody would like to join, DM me for an invite :) Can't guarantee things will be smooth from the start so YMMV. I'll be setting the server up in a few minutes, it was so cheap I couldn't resist purchasing a basic server hahaha.

EDIT: I chose Amsterdam just for the test, we can always change if necessary.

TPU has a discord server already. It would be great if that could be used instead of creating a new one just for the game

Well as I'm not an Unrealist, I believe we should have ALL the Unreal games :D :D Loved them all and many many hours gaming through them.. Still think I need to play all of them all again.. If I recall some of the levels where damn hard but then I'm not the best but enjoy it like hell! :) Still have all my original CD/DVD's for the games and Steam so good either way :)

Now for the daftest question ever @stinger608, could @W1zzard do anything like this for us?? Maybe help him with a 'few' bucks a month or something? I'm not sure at all what the server specs are needed etc. but it was just thought ...... :)

Yes, I'd be willing to coin some cash every month to help with the costs too :)

You know, I am not sure if that is something that @W1zzard would even consider.
I'm sure there are several members, especially in this thread, that would be more than willing to pitch in bucks to him, including myself.
Hopefully he chimes in on this and at least gives an answer either way.

I guess I should have included that question in the original poll.

That would have a lot to do with it. Hind sight I guess. :p

I will straight up pay for a U99 or UT2003/04 CFT Instgib server. Just need someone with the knowhow to set it up for me. Though I feel the demand would be low....

You are completely right, that's a better idea and makes it more accessible, I just joined the TPU Discord :)

Thanks for all the interest so far, it's been motivating to say the least :toast: Anyway, I tested the 2004 server earlier last eve and it worked like a charm, until I got sidetracked by sleep. If anybody wants to test with me for a bit, I'll be online in Discord under the username "Overclock All Things". BTW, thanks for wanting to chip in guys, really appreciate it, we'll take a look at it if it sticks :D

See ya in the arena!

EDIT: Username has to be the same as on here, so Anoniem -TPU

So, while UT2k4 was $14.99 on Steam, it is now $1.99 on sale on GOG (https://www.gog.com/game/unreal_tournament_2004_ece), so I'm going to purchase and contact support about an MP key and see what comes of it. At worst I'm out a couple bucks. The game is normally $9.99 on GOG, so maybe support charges $5? LOL. I guess we'll see.

I will report back my findings. For $1.99 why not try?

UT99 GOTY is $1.99 too (https://www.gog.com/en/game/unreal_tournament_goty), so, gonna pick that up as well. There's some negative reviews of having issues with newer PC's and WIndow 10 for both versions of the game, and I'm not seeing that so much on the Steam-side of things. But, I also was able to find folks that owned both and stated if they had no issue with one copy, the other one worked exactly the same. So I guess YMMV?

I'll try to report back more when I get time., but at those prices, to me its worth trying. If Steam had a sale instead I'd be buying from there.

Voted for Unreal Tournament 3, because that's the only one I played. Or to precise, play tested (Demo version). Didn't pick it up, but the DarkWalker gameplay was very innovative & fun.

Back then I was looking for something more realistic (esp. with iron sights), was most of my time sweating & piling up grunts in Insurgency:Modern Infantry Combat (the free HL2 mod) & Battlefield Bad Company 2. The golden age of gaming. Geez, just found out they made a "Gameumentary" about Insurgency, have to check it out. Sandstorm was a huge success, and since they are now on the Unreal engine their next game will be for sure on UE5. It will blow peoples socks off.

Btw. you forgot Unreal Tournament 2014 (on Epic Games, it's F2P). Granted, they abandoned it, but it has at least some filled servers, unlike all the older ones.

I've seen that on Epic before. It's still in the pre-alpha stage.

Have thought about downloading it, however, it probably has to be played through the Epic games launcher.

Yep, you need the Epic Games Launcher for it to download & play. It's an "Epic Exclusive" title, won't find it anywhere else.

They stopped development because it didn't take off. :(

Did you grab a copy of both @Kursah ?

Have you checked to see if you could jump in any online matches yet?

I picked up a new dvd drive and I'm able to install it now! Patched it up and is working fine on Windows 11. Able to join online no problem!

Mega Kill, Ultra Kill, Monster Kill, Holy Shit!

There was a mod call 'crotch shot' mod that had its own custom announcer messages.

Crotch shot, crotch master, crotch domination... etc etc

Heres a short clip of the UT99 mod on deck16 - the guy never really gets any multi-kills though so you dont get to hear the announcer going off one.

There used to be more vids at one point in time but i guess everyone grew up and stopped laughing at toilet humor (afaik the mod exists for UT2004)

I grabbed a copy of each, I reached out to GoG support but have yet to hear back for UT2k4. They said they'll email me, I suspect they're off for Good Friday.

I'm at work for a couple more hours, then I've got a sick kid to take over from the wife when I get home, that's when I plan to tackle this and test. I have the steam link hooked up to the TV in the living room, so I'll mess around with UT2k4 and 99, see how they fare.

Oh man, UT99. I really missed the odd servers with bizzaro drunk christmas levels with the Burl Ives soundtrack and the icy floors, the enormous Dark City sniper maps, and the giant bedrooms with mouse/action figured sized players.
Not to mention some of the vanilla maps like DM-Pressure, that pressure chamber was so satisfying.

I also think UT99 had some of the finest AI, even if Loque seems to cheese his headshots a bit.
