If it has electricty running thru it than it can catch fire also it can cause fire in nearbye obbjects
ie a wire's insulation melting and burning can spread the fire to non electrical items.

"think of house fire caused by electrical fault"
Thanks for that :) I am just hoping it is not the PSU that has blown.it is not that old and semi modulero_OAs i want be able to use that case if i can,t get any of those weird standoffs1186 .i don,t suppose you know where i can get them?

@MaxiPro800 Striker Formula might be a really good investment, they are rare. And it was one of the best performers in its class. From the OC Club review of a Rampage Formula (Crysis):

@Veseleil Considering the three mainboards that were there (the M5A97 LE, standard M5A97 and the Striker II Formula) weren't looking too great (I don't have high expectations for the M5A97 LE to work), it wouldn't have been a great idea to go with. That, and it looked like the board was severely warped - nVidia chipsets don't really like warped PCBs from my experience.

If anything and next Sunday the seller is still there, I might snag it and a Powercolor HD5870 along with it. Hopefully.

True, it might be dead. But you must admit that it would be a nice collector's item, if it's alive. I have no experience with Nvidia chipsets, but I've read they are pain to work with (OC wise).

They seem to have pretty big issues - FSB holes would be one (not sure who pointed this out but I recall seeing a post about this not many pages back on this thread), and cooling them is a royal pain in the arse - even if the Striker II Formula does have some beefy as heck heatsinks.

That's why I'd try to steer clear of nForce based 775 chipsets. As sweet as they might be, they're equally a royal pain in the butt to deal with. Fairly sure that if I were to go on building a Xeon (and I will, after I finish my exam session), I'd go on with the already configured 965P-DS4 and just go Tarzan from there with the possibilities.

I have just seen this on Gumtree
some one is selling it for £15 the CPU is only an i3 6100 with a heatsink fan and back plate but no Ram is it worth a punt for it? I see that I can get the ram
from CEX 8 GB PC17000 DDR4 2133MHz 288 Pin Memory for £10 this is the ram for it I take it? The guy said he had not used it for a couple of years. And says it should work. I will just get one stick and if it works ok get another. I will upgrade the CPU to an i3 8100 for £25 at CEX. does the board look ok?

Yes, s775 nForce has a lot of FSB holes. Specifically the 400-450MHz range, my 750i/780i/790i become unhappy and only will boot 1/3 times. The benefit being that you can run RAM unlinked albeit for worse efficiency. You potentially can make up for it. So Netburst CPUs which can't otherwise hit high RAM clocks can do 1250MHz+ on 780i for example.

Also X38/X48 don't clock 45nm quads quite as well as a good (Gigabyte) P45 can. However, 790i actually does a bit better at this than X38/X48, and Striker II NSE / Extremes can actually be found in the wild unlike Rampage Extremes. If you want a decent DDR3 s775 board it's either ASUS 790i/X38/X48, Foxconn BlackOps, or EP45T. Out of all those, Striker II is easiest to find nowadays for a reasonable price.

This is a collection of my nForce reference frequencies across s775 and multiple others for anyone interested.

Seeing as I have a 965P-DS4 (which seems to have been made with OC in mind - this thing has enough copper on it to survive a nuclear meltdown lmao), I wouldn't mind taking DDR2 over 3. I'd rather save my DDR3 for something in the X58 - Haswell range (especially with the recent B85M I bought - if it will ever work, that is) or an AM3 build.

For 775, I've always found that DDR2 was a bit more stable than DDR3 - I have had both P45 flavours - a DFI Lanparty DK P45-T2RS + X5450 for DDR2, and Gigabyte EP45T-DS3R for the DDR3 side - one thing I can tell for sure - the DFI was much more stable than the Gigabyte in daily usage.

Finally - the biggest issue is that the board I found looked pretty bent - the other two didn't look too great either, considering the horrifying amount of thermal paste I had to remove from the M5A97's CPU socket. It didn't help that the other GPUs the seller had for sale (a MSI NX8800GT, what I can only assume was a X1650 or close to that, a reference HD5850, the above mentioned Powercolor HD5870 and I think a GTX285 as well, not sure on this last one) had knocked off SMD components, I most certainly wouldn't want to deal with soldering SMDs, even more so on an nForce - I've already had an P5N-D with the whole SMDs from the bottom of the northbridge completely missing, and trying to fix that was not only a failure but a nightmare in itself. The only reason I have went with the M5A97 LE is because it was the least mangled board out of the bunch - at best it's missing two SMD caps near the EPU chip, which aren't too much of a hassle to solder back, if anything.

...aaand then again, space. I legitmately don't even know how I would go around cramming the M5A97 and B85M alone in my luggage for when I come back home (21st of February, maybe give a day or two). Trying to cram a 3rd mobo (Striker II Formula) only to find out it's as dead as a doornail would be horrifying. Fitting the CM Hyper 212 EVO along would be even more of a hassle (though if I can get the 2x 250GB drives to fit in the case I got the 965P-DS4 in, I guess I could get away with cramming it in my luggage instead of the drives.

I found this socket A board on eBay. It looks unlike any other board I've seen, except a similarly all-purple motherboard. The way the little SMD components blend in with the white PCB is almost mesmerizing o_O And take a look at those shiny capacitors (although it seems they need replacing :()

I would totally bid on this if I had a reason to, other than the fact that I want it because it looks cool.

Nice, I had a Soyo board back in the day, i want to say it was purple, or maybe it was a black PCB with Purple slots.

Soyo Dragons, they usually had various color schemes. The caps were ther main failure point - I feel like they used the same provider as Jetway though, as I remember Jetway also had those funky silver caps at one point.

Otherwise, the features they were offeeing were prerty high - I dare say up on par with ASUS of the same era, almost.

2nd PC aka Z68 build :)

Nice build. I have the same/similar board (P8Z68-V Pro-Gen3, worst name ever).
Good VRM but I find it doesn't clock as high as some other boards, Z77 does better for me in that regard. The ASUS is -100MHz at the same voltages & CPU vs my Biostar TZ77XE4.

I'll get a 3770K as fast as I can afford, even though 2500K is a legend, it's still a 12yrs old 4-threaded CPU..

The X58 board with your dono CPU is in my closet, maybe I'll benchmark it someday still :)

currently tracking 2 auctions, one on a TNT1 and one on a Matrox... *finger crossed*
Speaking of... I was told (not so long ago) how the Riva TNT AGP cards are commonly (and easily) found & can be obtained for next to nothing. Which of course made me optimistic of finding one for myself, even though I don't remember finding a single TNT throughout all these years of my retro hardware obsession. Buuut things didn't quite work out the way I was hoping to.

After going through several ebay listings I realized that if I ever decide to grab one I will have to spend at least $20 if not more. In fact, some TNT cards go for 2-3 times as higher but I don't understand why?! There's nothing special about them (and no, these are not "Ultra" models) heck, some of them don't even have S-Video and/or TV output. So after reaching out to a friend from the local forum, I bought the"Creative" 3D Blaster from him, for the price of 14$. But only because he was feeling generous enough, as I'm pretty sure that he could have sold that Creative TNT to someone else for twice the price.

In either case I wish you good luck. :toast:

Welp, until further extensive testing later in February, I'm calling the M5A97 board dead. I bought a Phenom II X2 550 (a nice unlockable chip) that was tested working before my own eyes. No POST, no beeps, not even a speaker click.. CPU does heat up tho, and I can turn off the board after 5 seconds so not fully dead, but due to lack of quite a lot of parts, I'm unable to test it any more further.

The B85M-E is also put on hold as I have yet to found a retention bracket to test it and a CPU. This one does emit a speaker click so the chances for it to work rise significantly. If everything goes fine, I guess this would make a good Vista i7 machine, of all things. ( yes, you've heard about Sandy XPs, now get ready for a Haswell-la-Vista i7 machine )

2023_ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe-1406-NVME_M.2_SSD_BIOS_MOD
This bios has been changed to Date 02/29/2023 (Until Feb 28 this year, 29 never.)
The boot logo has been rearranged to 1024x768. (I don't know if it will work. It will probably give access to the Bios. No problem.)
PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_5763
PCI\VEN_144D&DEV_A804
these two NVMe SSD modules have been added.

The MSI K8N Neo3 bios is AWARD and quite old.Year 2006.
Older AWARD bios can sometimes cause problems. I know this from previous experience.
Likewise this bios
PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_5763
PCI\VEN_144D&DEV_A804
Added these two NVMe SSD modules.
This motherboard doesn't have boot logo in stock bios.. But I can add more if you want. It can be tested like this for now..
These bios files are untested. They are experimental.
It is the user's responsibility to install the bios files.
I wish you success in advance.

Finally, to avoid an error, stock bios official bios pages:
I thank you kindly for your efforts. My apologies for the delay in testing.

I am unfortunately unable to test the K8N Neo3-F BIOS. The motherboard has one x16 PCIe slot & one x1 slot. I only have an x4 NVMe PCIe card, & my HD 2400 Pro does not work with the AGR slot. In the event that I purchase a x1 NVMe adapter, I will certainly test this board.

I have also tested a 1TB MX500 on the internal NF4 SATA II ports just for fun. However, the drive is operating in SATA I mode. I can only assume this is a compatibility issue, or perhaps due to a lack of NF4 chipset drivers for W10 32-bit.

Another flawless execution by yourself, as usual. ;) It's very weird to see such an old board utilize NVMe.

Welp, got some progress w/ the M5A97 - works with a Sempron 145 but not a Phenom II X2 o_O

The same Phenom does POST fine on a 880GM-UD2H Rev 1.4.

Also scored:

-Husk 450W PSU w/ PFC
-Spacer 250W PSU
-MSI MS-7336 mobo (946GZM, HP OEM more or less - surprisingly uses a socketed BIOS chip which makes my life so much easier)
-Gigabyte 880GM-UD2H Rev 1.4 (noted above)
-500GB Seagate Pipeline HDD, 160GB Seagate 7200.10, 1TB Samsung HD103SI
- Sony ND-3500A DVDRW
- HP 775 cooler w/ AVC fan (needs cleaning)
- SD/CF/xD/MS Pro USB reader
-PCI-E x1 TP-Link LAN card
-2GB Crucial DDR3 RAM that only works in certain boards
-Sapphire Radeon HD6670 1GB DDR3 (interestingly, RAM is branded AMD :wtf:) that might probably be able to flash into a 7670.

I hear ya, Lex. At this point I just miss 2-slot cards like the 960s below, or my 2080Ti FE.

I got some new toys in very nice condition. The 960s and the motherboard still had their protective plastic wrap on them, no less.
