TPU's Nostalgic Hardware Club

Nice upgrade. You've effectively upgrade yourself to the limit. Only one faster CPU for that socket and they are exceedingly rare and pricey!

I have to ask: What's with Windows 8.1? Windows 7 is SOOO much better!
I installed this OS awhile ago. I couldn't find my 7 disc that day and just decided to put 8.1 on it. It's heavily heavily debloated and runs pretty well. It was even a supported OS by MS back when I installed it, although now it isn't.

Right after I bought it this laptop got a new motherboard and base to fix some issues. The old base has a Windows 7 key on it, this one has a Vista key. I should put Vista on it just for the memes.

Unfortunately it decided to lock itself back to 700mhz and limit itself to 25% usage again. I might try a different os to see if it's windows doing this.

Dose any one still use Windows 8?I don,t see many videos on youtube, someone must like it. there must be one? o_O
but what about 8.1?
. Whats you fav OS ,i think Lex,s is ME..and what about Linux does any one in this forum use it on a Retro PC? o_O

My favorite has been Windows XP. It just reminds me of a time when I was doing a lot of PC gaming and going to LAN parties.

Second favorite has been Windows 7. Great OS.

8.1 was so much better than the original Windows 8.

I currently have 2 systems that run XP and 4 running Windows 7.

Installed Windows 7 alongside 8.1 and wish I did this sooner. This laptop really does feel at home on Windows 7 and is surprisingly noticeably quicker than it is on 8.1. Some of this is probably since its a fresh install without anything opening at startup.

I used my Windows 7 Home Premium OEM disc from 2011/2012 since it was convenient. I have gotten pretty familiar with the process required to install a few updates manually then let the auto updater finish the job, so its not a big deal. I also upgraded the version to Windows 7 Professional and used the key printed on the base. It doesn't want to activate using this key, and I am not sure why since it is a valid key for this laptop.

1080P Youtube is a little struggle still but better on 7 than 8.1. I tried H264ify and it makes it significantly worse for some reason. This display is so nice it seems like a waste not running YouTube at a higher resolution.

Have you tried the Activate by Phone option? It might work. If not it's possible someone used the key to upgrade a system to Win10 at some point.

Phone activation worked. Just a pain in the butt.

Honestly, it's in my top 5! WinME was excellent once tweaked to perfection. I might be in the minority, but when everyone else's Win98 machines were BSODing for whatever, mine wasn't..
I liked WinMe as well. I gamed on it nightly and as you say, after tweaking, it ran well. I think it was on a Pentium II.

The current dislike for it is probably that cultural and popular avalanche such things get caught in.

I am going to try and get it on a CF card ,I allready have 2000 on a CF card .I try 98 on a SD card and try ME on a CF card or SD caed.

I miss those days when a new version of Windows was exciting.

:) Do any of you use the Ram and CPU testers? o_O

Using the PS2 to HDMI converter can connect your PS2 game console to a high-resolution TV or HDMI monitor to achieve the simultaneous output of audio and video, and supports all PS2 display modes 480i/576i/480 does anyone know why i can,t get a picture with the above converter?I see someone on Amazon has put this in there reciew.
This item is not readily compatible with ps2. You need to change ps2 settings to ybpr. To get the PlayStation 2 into YPBPR (component) mode do the following:
Start up the PlayStation 2 without a game in it.
Wait about 20 seconds.
Press Down.
Press X.
Press Down three times.
Press X.
Press Left.
Press X.
I don,t have a PD2 controler thouh. But i understand the PS3 controler can work with the PS2.I put the chatging cabal in the USB port but there were no lights showing on the controler. o_O 1475 is all i got and that was only when the disk was in the drive.Quite a few people have said it does not work.No one mentions it wotking with a PC Monitor

Me too. That was a time when a new version of Windows was something to get all excited about. And while I like Windows 11, it's a pain to wrangle into a usable(read secure, lean & clean to MY standards) state.

Usually just needs cleaning and the tray gears re-greased.

Thanks for that Lex :) It is something you don,t want to have to do when you are buying one ,,the seller should sort it out before selling it.I will give that one a miss.I am hoping i can sort the one i bought today for £10 ,i have just orded a controller for it.As you can see it is in very good condition ,i only see the dust in the fan,.

I hope you guys don't mind all the Videos, but I love this old stuff that I've never seen before. :rockout:

After DOS 3.2 and 6.22 it begin all with Windows 3.11 for Workgroups.Then 95, 98, ME, 2000, XP, 7, 10, 11

3.11 till 98 was a lot of Blue screens at my setup. ME was doing a lot better. When i had Athlon XP's i had 2 PC's. 1 running Win2000, the Other WinXP.
The WinXP original theme i changed directly to Windows Classic, because it looked so horrible to me. With no overclocks from Win2000 i only have good experience with Windows. Win7 was perfect. I skipped 8 / 8.1 because of the start menu i didn't like and i didn't want to use third party tools to get things back.

Windows 10 and 11 are okay, except that they collect a lot of info and send it to M$. So i only use 11 to play older games that also work under 7/10/11 and don't need internet connection.

My main daily PC runs ZorinOS 16.2 Pro and Fedora 38. It's a learning curve, but I don't want to go back to Windows.

Just go to a local hardware store. You can determine the diameter and length measurements at the store.
