Games maker signs agreement with Hasbro for new online title out next year

The powerhouse Transformers IP will next year get a brand new MMO following an agreement between casual behemoth Jagex and rights holder Hasbro.

The game has been pencilled in for a 2012 release in Europe, North America, Latin America, New Zealand and Australia.

“Transformers is one of the most iconic brands in the world and we are delighted to team up with Hasbro in order to bring our shared vision to reality,” Jagex CEO Mark Gerhard stated.

“There is a huge appetite for an online Transformers game and we will utilise every bit of our development and publishing expertise to deliver a dynamic and action-packed game that Transformers fans will find irresistible.”

Hasbro's senior VP and GM of digital gaming and media Mark Blecher added: “Hasbro’s decision to align with Jagex speaks to the quality of their award-winning development and publishing team that boasts an outstanding track record of delivering innovative and fun online games capable of reaching millions of gamers across the globe.

“We are extremely excited to create a dream team that combines Transformers brand stewards with Jagex development experts to deliver an epic Transformers gaming experience to fans in 2012.”

If they just signed now and it's coming out next year, I wouldn't be expecting anything good at all. MMO's aren't a type of game you whip out in a year, they usually take 3 - 4 years if not more.

who's jagex and what are their big mmorpg titles ?

edit: ahh .. runescape

I didn't pick up on that :(

I thought the same at first :)

It's a title that given time to produce could be awesome, with the amount of customization that is possible. But also remember the scale of them vs the world. Entire cities would really be that much landscape, and they would need to be detailed. What I think of when I think of this game being whipped out in a year is, premade player characters, and city's that look like the ones in flight games when you fly close to the ground.

i want customisable transformations, kinda like those old robot wars PC games :(

so if i wanted to, i could make a tank in the shape of a giant doodle, that turns into flying boobies with eyeball lazers.

WHY NO MMOS FOR THIS?!?

Agreed!

PS: standard Transformers (ie Optimus Prime, Galvatron etc) are not that big. So the cities could be highly detailed :D It would probably be best if it was set on Cybertron ;)

This will be a disaster if the action is the same as the current transformers games are.

That would be cool, but would take a lot of work. I have my hopes up for MechWarrior, but of course, it's not an MMO.

They aren't huge, but they are a few stories tall, so their scale compared to the world is much larger vs your average MMO, and they have built in fast travel, the game world would need to be very large.

True. So it would probably work better if it was set on Cybertron instead of earth (or maybe a bit of both) :D

Yeah, something that has less structures and more open world would most likely be much easier to do. It just sucks they are giving this a year to be made, that means it most likely will have to be wrapped up in about 8 months, then tested and released, I can't imagine it's going to be much of a game at all.

Unless they are planning a browser based game or something, which would be just as sad.

i read about a transformers mmo some time ago but it was only to be released in parts of asia,im happy to see this is going global transformers PWNS!!!
runescape wasnt so bad i played it for a time. they must be doing something correct jagex has near 10 mil subscibers.
i do hope its not just a browser game to because limits would make it suck!!!!!
