Up until a few weeks ago, Taiwan had been largely spared from local spread of the Coronavirus, but the Omicron variant has bypassed the defences that were set up to prevent the virus from spreading. Although the amount of verified cases are still comparatively very low, there's a cluster of over 100 cases confirmed in a free trade zone near the Taoyuan airport, which has so far mostly affected Askey, but other companies in the same free trade zone have had their staff tested and are waiting for the results. As a preventive measure, TSMC, UMC and other companies are already implementing working from home rules for staff that aren't critical to production.

TSMC already started what they call epidemic prevention measures last week and called off unnecessary face to face meetings, paused international business trips and limited local business trips, among other things. TSMC has also stopped all regional shuttle buses between its various locations in Taiwan, as well as local shuttle buses between plants, to help prevent any potential spread. The company is also said to have closed most of its staff facilities and even suspended its Chinese New Year party, which is one of the highlights for many workers in Taiwan, largely due to the giveaways that the companies are doing, in addition to any bonuses that are being paid around this time of the year. Time will tell if Taiwan can continue to stave off the virus, but to date, 73.2 percent of the population has taken two shots of vaccine, although the government is already pushing for a third dose, largely because most people have received the AstraZeneca vaccine which is considered as giving less protection against the Omicron variant. It should be noted that neither TSMC or UMC have any chip plats in Taoyuan, but TSMC does have a backed fab at the opposite end of Taoyuan.

Can we have a poll to guess the size of price increases?

So far, none of this are affecting production, as mentioned.
And you'd have to be really dense to believe this one is just a cover for a price increase after all we've been through.

Once Omicron burns through the world, and it will since it spreads so easy, I think the future looks very bright... Omicron may be a blessing in disguise. I hope I am right, probably not, but I am pretty sure another Delta like strain that spreads fast will break the back of this world we called civilization, so lets hope I am right. Modern humans have no discipline, so the back will break eventually.

Considering what you say is true for arguments sake. Any guarantee the dog eating people will not release another virus from one of their many labs ?

Another nail in the coffin

That's what the real doctors are saying all over. Variants don't get stronger, they get weaker. Real science wins in the end. PCR got recalled, which was predictable with the creator of it warning for months now it wasn't designed for c19 and how they played with the cycle counts. Wait till the new tests finally get out in mass that differentiate between cold and flu in the next few months. Gonna be riots over this nonsense. Practically already is in parts of Europe.

That's not science, that's luck. It was completely possible (and still is) it could mutate into something worse.

Delta itself is evidence that that's not a real law. Delta was worse in every way than the initial strain, and came after.

Are you trying to say the existing kits do not differentiate between cold/flu and COVID19? Because I very much doubt that.

What is Taiwans longer term plan? Keep up these measures indefinitely?

If this isn't affecting production now, there is a reasonably good chance it will eventually.

Unclear, but the head of the local CDC has suggested that Taiwan is going to have to live with the virus, as zero Covid isn't going to be viable long term.
At least most people are getting vaccinated, so it shouldn't be as big deal as in some other countries, especially as Taiwan has managed to keep the case count at a minimum so far and even lucked out and put an end to a smaller local spread last year.

Once everyone has had the 'vid' can we just go back to normal (pre-covid)?? :)

Not neccesarily. Natural Immunity tends only to work for the variant you caught. It's why getting vaccinated is still important.

I mean you could go all Pokemon and try "gotta catch em all" but you'll most likely die. Just get the shot.

Been doubled vaxd for a long time. And death. That’s just early retirement. ;). Worked in govi desert for awhile. Needed about 6 vaxes for that. Mom was a nurse. Wife is a nurse. There is a lot of things more worrisome than covid…….if you know about them.

Wasn't speaking just to you, more broadly, and yes the world is full of all kinds of nasties if one strays too far from home... and sometimes even at home.

Sometimes ignorance actually is bliss ;) (referring to all the bugs out there)
