well my main rig still uses xp, so yea... lol. And I just now upgraded to a dual core lol. So i guess yea we are talking different worlds here. I dont really swear by it, actually i havent even really thought about it in a long time, its just been there for a long time and ive never changed it, I just always set it up like that. It may not really help atall. I know it used to, though, and I dont see any reason to change it. I think if youre looking to optimize your pagefile in the first place beyond setting it up correctly, then it cant hurt.

NOW i wonder... ive seen some desktop add in cards for really cheap that use CF cards and even a few slightly more expensive ones that raid two of them together. i wonder what that would do? Is CF interface fast enough to yield performance? And on the higher end, what about those add in cards that use actual SODIMMS as a hard drive?

CF cards have good access times, but poor throughput. you realy need to raid a few of em to get decent speeds - and they dont like lots of read and writes, they die fast. which kinda makes em a bad idea for a page file.

Page files mean nothing unless you run out of ram! buy more ram!

Now i know this isnt the case because thats the reason its a bad idea to disable it completely. Some programs expect and use a pagefile whether youve run out of ram or not. Plus theres the 2gb access under 32 bit windows and such

However, yea i guess CF wouldnt be good because of the read write cycles limit. But the ram drives would eliminate that.

Well, you can't mix x86 vs x64 in PF either as x64 has much more usable memory space allocation...but in x64, you have better odds of going to ram before page-file. True there are programs and even games that call for PF, but many will go to ram first by order of the OS. X64 + 4GB of RAm + 4GB of PF = WIN! At least for me!

some programs use it regardless, but those programs use it for reasons to save ram, not for performance.

If a program is designed to use the page file, odds are it doesnt need performance to run - the only times you NOTICE page file use is when programs that are designed to run in memory (games, for example) run out and are forced to run off the HDD.
