This solution works very well indeed.
The biggest problem is some games refuses to work for no reason. Lies of P is one them, it outputs only stereo. Anyone else with the same problem?
Have you tried patching the XAudio2*.dll files as I mention above? That worked for me when some games weren't working but others were.

Yes, I tried that. No success.
Sorry, I should have asked... Did you patch in both System32 and SysWOW64 (or at least in the one folder that you *know* your game is using)? I had one game that needed the XAudio2*.dll files in System32 patched and another that needed the XAudio2*.dll files in SysWOW64 patched.

I patched both folders. It didn't work. :(

the change with the drivers worked and I can finally use the direct optics to have a DD 5.1 multi-channel, however I also encounter problems that on some games the audio is still Stereo (Cyberpunk, A Plague Tale, Resident Evil4, EaSport WRC and F1 23). any advice on this?

Sorry, but I'm on the same boat. Cyberpunk and A Plague Tale don't work for me either. I think it's something related to the game implementation of surround sound.

the only one for me is to go through hdmi-tv-arc I have multichannel everywhere but with audio delay of about 200ms and this drives you crazy!.

It seems that most people who can't get this to work are those of us who have MSI motherboards. I'm using an MSI MAG B650 TOMAHAWK WIFI.

I tried the @Gustavo Sicha solution. I performed the whole process without internet and running DDU in safe mode. Realtek HD audio drivers R2.80 installed correctly, but neither Realtek HD showed up as an installed app nor did I get the ability to change the output device to 5.1 surround.

1. Downloaded the zip file of RealtekHD audio drivers R2.80 and Pihto’s patch file
2. Disconnected PC from the internet
3. Used cmd prompt to permanently disable the mandatory use of signed drivers
4. Booted into safe mode and used DDU on Realtek audio drivers
5.Restarted computer while disabling driver signature enforcement.
6. Used the patch file to patch the rltkAPO.dll in win32 and patched both rltkAPO64.dll and rltkAPO.dll in win64
7. Ran the Realtek setup program with no errors
8. Opened regedit and navigated to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Audio
9. Added the DWORD (32-bit) value “DisableProtectedAudioDG” with a hex value 1
10. Restarted PC

I then tried what @Toxster suggested and used Driver store Explorer to remove the drivers he listed. I again performed all of the above steps, but still got the same results as before.

@bottlefedc83 's solution in the 1st paragraph sounded promising. But I can’t find a .dll file similar in name to RltkAPOU64.dll in any Realtek folder. The closest folder I have to what they’ve described is realtekusbapo.inf_amd64_...., but the only .dll file in that folder was called RtkMicUUn64.
I had no idea what they were talking about in the 2nd paragraph, in regards to inserting Microsoft SFX into the system mixer and configuring the FX configurator.

You guys are making this too hard, you don't need to disable driver enforcement or anything, just patch the .dll then rename it to RltkAPOU64.dll boot into safe mode, if for some reason the audio driver still launches just disable the service, then copy RltkAPOU64.dll overwriting the installed one in "C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\realtekapo.inf_amd64_86fc0b0b9eccc8ac" or something similar, you will see it. Reboot and enjoy. I have even done this without booting into safe mode by disabling audo endpoint builder and audio services. As long as the driver isn't trying to load the .dll you can overwrite it and reboot.

The patched .dll are a pain in my opinion not because of the method described above its because how realtek handles the implementation. If you patch the .dll you are leaving realtek SFX/MFX/EFX to handle the DTSi & DDL since realtek loves to kill off using the system mixer unless you manipulate SFX it will only output stereo despite the endpoint switching output channels to 5.1, a problem many run into still. This is fixed pretty easy by inserting Microsoft SFX ,{62dc1a93-ae24-464c-a43e-452f824c4250}, into your chain so the system mixer can see what EFX output channels are and act accordingly. For example when I used to run patched .dll to get DTSi I would need to configure my FX configurator as follows:

Code:
[LFX]
{62dc1a93-ae24-464c-a43e-452f824c4250}
{DC253AB8-10DC-483c-AB5F-D6A4E189FD70}

[MFX]

[ProcessingEFX]
{C18E2F7E-933D-4965-B7D1-1EEF228D2AF3}

This is as opposed to
Code:
[LFX]
{DC253AB8-10DC-483c-AB5F-D6A4E189FD70}
[GFX]
{A27368B3-D810-42ce-B114-83900258B8EC}

[ProcessingEFX]
{C18E2F7E-933D-4965-B7D1-1EEF228D2AF3}

This will allow you to get upmix from the system mixer in without the need to disable system enhancements or in other words, proper upmix based on speaker configuration while running in WASAPI shared mode (all the time) instead of WASAPI exclusive mode only.

Its honestly a cool little work around since you can now get APO's to work while running DTSi or DDL. My favorite has been NAHIMIC (sonic studio 3 in my case since it came with my board) with DTSi. It does a good job of subtle effects and gives decent HRTF. Worth a try. Ironically I didn't patch .dll to achieve it, a config as follows is easier and just as effective.

Code:
[CompositeSFX]
{62dc1a93-ae24-464c-a43e-452f824c4250}
{670173E1-78CF-11E5-A837-0800200C9A66}

[CompositeEFX]
{A29EB043-6CE2-4ee2-B38C-F58719E0D88F}
{A515262A-68B3-441a-A310-0D145362EE87}
[ProcessingSFx]
{C18E2F7E-933D-4965-B7D1-1EEF228D2AF3}
{B26FEB0D-EC94-477C-9494-D1AB8E753F6E}
{4780004E-7133-41D8-8C74-660DADD2C0EE}
[ProcessingMFX]
{C18E2F7E-933D-4965-B7D1-1EEF228D2AF3}
{B26FEB0D-EC94-477C-9494-D1AB8E753F6E}
{4780004E-7133-41D8-8C74-660DADD2C0EE}

{4780004E-7133-41D8-8C74-660DADD2C0EE}

I also looked into what @RazielTek and @Nusuth and others had tried by putting the patched and renamed rltkAPO64.dll and rltkAPO.dll files into the installation folder of the drivers from my motherboard webpage. But once again I didn't have those files anywhere. The closest file I could find was RtkApi64U.dll.
I did have 2 folders named RealtekUSBAPO_12_1097 and RealtekUSBAPO_13_1097, but neither had any .dll file with APO in the name.

Are things not working for me because my Realtek is installing USB audio drivers? Does anyone know of a workaround?

what you guys are doing is totally unnecessary

  1. Virtual Audio Cable: Virtual Audio Cable (VAC) can be a viable alternative. It acts as a virtual audio device, allowing you to route audio from any application to another. You can configure VAC to output audio in various formats, including Dolby Digital and DTS, through your existing SPDIF interface. This eliminates the need for driver patching and registry edits.
  2. Audio Encoders/Decoders:Several third-party software programs function as audio encoders and decoders. These applications can take your source audio and convert it to various surround sound formats, including Dolby Digital and DTS, which you can then output through your SPDIF interface. Popular options include:
    • Voicemeeter Banana
    • HeSuVi Encoder
    • DTS:X for Headphones

Yeah not totally sure about USB drivers, haven't messed with those in a while. It probably doesn't use RltkAPOU64.dll in usb drivers as they are different topology. If the USB came with a SPDIF port I would maybe have some hope, but even then it would be next to none. With USB you may need to use @Ferather method of changing it to HD audio to allow legacy topology tricks to work, but again shot in the dark little hope type of suggestion.

Are you saying you have a way to use VAC to do conversion and mixing into DTS or Dolby? Can you link me the process? I was not aware it did format conversion.

@mdueck, you have a Realtek USB by the sounds of your post, this patched pack is for HDA Realtek, it will not install at all on USB.
Remove-undo everything you did, includung driver signing, install your normal USB driver then follow this:

DTS:X APO4 + DTS Interactive for Most Devices [USB Supported] < DTS only, no Dolby.

Read the second post for Realtek USB compatible files.

if u really want dts yes however if your ok with useing dolby i did find some dolby digital plus home theater drivers they renabled the dolby digital out feature so u can bitstream over usb for full 7.1 audio https://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/making-audio-enhancers-work-on-windows.244309/ dk if it can actually do 7.1 i only have a 5.1 speaker system still cool tho

Will these work with my 2023 Asus ROG Strix Z790-H Gaming WIFI motherboard, all i know is its a ASUS ROG SS3|DTS Sound Unbound motherboard without ALC408x codec, thx

Think my codec is Audio CODEC S1220A, what ever that is, but it is realtek sound drivers on my official asus motherboard site.

Sorry for late reply. I played a lot of games and surround works fine in all of them. Except lies of P.

And in forza 2023 for some reason windows volume control does not work. It has been a long time but I am pretty sure cyberpunk had surround sound.

Do you guys use the Dolby Digital for 7.1 configuration systems?
no use dolby digital plus thats meant for 7.1 systems the drivers iv reasponded to in the other thread is dolby digital live ( dolby digital plus but with live encodeing for games) that is all you need dolby digital can only drive 5.1 dolby digital plus/ live can do 7.1 surround

I recently upgraded to win 11 using clean installation, and suddenly the same driver i used for win10 started had issues in some games.
Well, actually one game - Horizon Forbidden West. Sound is lagging and tearing catastophically. Other games work fine with 5.1 output absoluteley no problem.
Strange thing i have played Horizon Forbidden West on win 10 before upgrade and everything was fine.

I have tried numerous different drivers and solutions and niether helped.
I even found specific realtek patched APU dll i have used in win 10 from the old c: drive shadow copy.
So im now forced to use HDMI connection to the same reciever, with HDMI everything works fine.

ALC1200 on A520 AORUS ELITE (rev. 1.0)
Used SPDIF to connect my Yamaha RX-V463 5.1 reciever.

Just wanted to warn others that want to upgrade to 11

I tried to follow instruction for your recoomended Dolby Digital Plus Home Theater (DS1) but the dolby driver is not starting and ther is no option on the adapter.
I doubt that helps anyway, everything was working on other apos except Horizon Forbidden West

This is too complex for my audio knowledge.
I have quite old reciever, it only supports simple Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic I/II, and DTS, wich enhancer on this long list Audio Enhancers - Google Drive i should use?
My goal to have 5.1 on SPDIF.

Thanks, i managed to install both scenarios (DD and DTS) separatly, and test them.
The situation is exactly the same. Everything is working fine except Horizon Forbidden West
Seems this game uses some new sound output dependence in win 11, which is somehow incompatible with these encoders.
Strange though, that through HDMI it works fine.
